Carbon Cycle Modelling

£33,797 per annum

Applications are invited for the post of Senior Research Associate under the supervision of Professor Corinne Le Quéré, to support the development of the first High-Resolution-High-Complexity model of the global ocean carbon cycle, and use this model to understand past variability and future changes.

The post holder will set up the ocean component of the UK Earth System Model model on the UEA HPC computer, couple it with an existing carbon cycle model, and conduct model simulations. Depending on interests, the position can be adapted to focus on the technical developments or on the scientific interpretation.

The post will be part of the Royal Society Research Professorship of Prof Le Quéré. The new model development forms the backbone of the research programme of Prof Le Quéré in this 5-year project. The model will also be used for other projects of Prof Le Quéré, in particular the NERC SONATA project on Southern Ocean CO2 fluxes, and the EC CCiCC project on carbon-climate feedbacks, hence providing multiple opportunities for joint projects and publications. The model output will feed into the annual publication of the Global Carbon Budget.

The researcher will be the main specialist programmer in the group. The post-holder will be expected to work in a team and support experienced and less-experiences members alike. The post-holder will have interactions with researchers outside of the UEA, both in the UK and internationally.

The research will be based at the University of East Anglia in the School of Environmental Sciences.

A PhD in science or equivalent work experience, along with previous experience of independent development and use of complex computer models in any science. Experience in the interpretation of model output. You will have advance programming skills, the ability to work with multiple programming languages, and excellent analytical skills. You will have an interest in carbon cycle and climate change science, but you do not need specific knowledge in those fields to apply. You should be able to work in a team and conduct independent research; and be able to meet all the essential criteria set out in the Person Specification.

This full time post is for a fixed term of 24 months and is available from 1 January 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The start date and hours are flexible.

Closing date:  5 October 2019.
