THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the President of Stanford, the Director will have the opportunity to build on the Hoover Institution’s distinguished history as a source of new ideas and knowledge, and a leader in the development of public policy. The Director will work with Hoover’s world-class fellows to build the fellowship and maintain and advance the Hoover mission. In doing so, the director will also be able to work in conjunction with the President and Stanford’s seven schools and their deans, scholars and students, participating in the vibrant, innovative intellectual life of the university and its research programs. Stanford University, located between San Francisco and San Jose in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley, is one of the world’s leading teaching and research universities.  Since its opening in 1891, Stanford has been dedicated to finding solutions to critical challenges and to preparing students for leadership in a complex world.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

The director will be responsible for managing the Hoover Institution, a multidimensional role that includes:

  • Developing and putting into effect a compelling vision for the Hoover Institution for the next decade and beyond.
  • Leading, inspiring, and expanding Hoover’s scholarly community of senior fellows and research fellows; facilitating the creation by Hoover fellows of novel programming that fits strategically within Hoover’s mission.
  • Encouraging the publication and circulation of ideas in the public arena and among public policymakers.
  • Managing an array of departments and functions including the completion of a major new building project.
  • Maintaining, augmenting, and leveraging the Institution’s library and archives to enhance scholarly and policy-relevant research.
  • Managing an annual operating budget of $70 million.
  • Directing and expanding Institution fundraising, which produced approximately $51 million in contributions in the last fiscal year.
  • Sustaining Hoover’s distinctive identity at Stanford while working collaboratively with Stanford faculty, administrative leadership and students to encourage productive engagement of the Hoover Institution with the university community.
  • Working effectively with the Hoover Board of Overseers, and defining a strategy to broaden and deepen this group. Working effectively with the Stanford Board of Trustees.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Someone of national stature who is highly respected in the scholarly community and public policy arena.
  • A successful record as a visionary leader, institution builder, and talented and resourceful administrator who can attract, retain, and motivate high quality scholars and effectively manage Hoover’s diverse operations.
  • Commitment to the core values of the Hoover Institution and enthusiasm about its mission.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially and effectively with a wide array of constituencies, including senior leaders in the public and private sectors, faculty and university administrators across departments, and students.
  • Strong communication skills; excellent listening, analytical and interpretive skills as well as mature judgment, political acumen, and diplomacy.
  • Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree strongly preferred, plus exceptional leadership experience in an academic, government, business or public policy program or organization.
