AIIM RESEARCH FACILITY

  • PhD Opportunity (with stipend), conducting polymers for bioelectronics, Australian Institute for Innovative Materials (AIIM)

The opportunity

The Australian Institute for Innovative Materials(AIIM) is the flagship research institute at the University of Wollongong with a focus on multidisciplinary materials science fundamental and applied research. The Australian Research Council has awarded a Discovery Project to develop novel biocompatible conjugated polymers with long operational stability in physiological conditions and enhanced electronic performance that, when integrated into bioelectronic devices, will form the basis for new implant technology with enhanced longevity and adaptability of form and function.  A PhD Scholarship opportunity arises, as part of this Discovery Project, to design and synthesise a series of side- and end-functionalised polyethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT)-based conjugated polymers and characterise their chemical and physico-chemical properties. The resulting polymers will be investigated as interface materials for bioelectronic devices. The PhD candidate will be supervised by Professor David Officer, see profile https://electromaterials.edu.au/profiles/professor-david-officer/

The research will be undertaken, on a full time basis, at the AIIM facility at the Innovation Campus in Wollongong, New South Wales. https://aiim.uow.edu.au/index.html

Remuneration

The 2019 Research Training Program (RTP) living allowance stipend is AUD $27,596 per annum (indexed annually), tax free for three years and is offered as part of this PhD opportunity.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold relevant Master / honours level qualifications in relevant discipline (e.g. synthetic chemistry, polymer synthesis). Experience in the synthesis and characterisation of aromatic monomers and polymers would be advantageous. It is essential that PhD Scholarship applicants can work collaboratively in a multi discipline team. Excellent English language (written and oral) skills are required.
