Masaryk University is the second-largest university in the Czech Republic with nine faculties, more than 5000 staff, and more than 30 000 students.

The Department of Physical Electronics at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University provides courses and guarantees fundamental and applied research in the fields on plasma physics, plasma applications, and nanotechnology. It has a tradition of more than 50 years.

The R&D Centre for Low-cost Plasma and Nanotechnology Surface Modifications (CEPLANT) was established in 2010 as part of the Department of Physical Electronics and was funded by the European Structural Funds and has been recognized by the European Union as a Key Enabling Technologies (KET's) centre. CEPLANT boasts a rich network of cooperating institutions in the world. Cooperation with colleagues in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Hungary is expected within the proposed position.

 Position Description

The postdoc will work at the within the PVDlab that is a part of the CEPLANT centre. The project focusses on deposition of X-B-C nanostructured coatings and refractive metal-based high entropy alloy coatings utilizing magnetron sputtering and their further complex analyses by methods available at the centre (SEM, EDX, XRD, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, nanoindentation) as well as by methods available at cooperating institutions within Europe (TEM, tribological properties, thermal and oxidation stability,…). The goal of the project is to achieve understanding between the deposition plasma properties and the properties of the deposited coatings. The project is therefore in the border area between Physics, Materials Chemistry and Engineering sciences.

Key Duties

The main tasks of the postdoc will be:

  • To choose the deposition conditions and independently carry out the depositions by magnetron sputtering
  • To measure the properties of the coatings, analyse the data and use them as feedback for establishing further experiments
  • To publish the research outputs
  • To propose and develop new areas of research within the research group

Desired Skills and Experience

The applicant must have:

  • Ph.D. Degree in Physics, Materials Chemistry, Engineering or in nearby scientific fields
  • Good communication skills in (oral and written) English
  • Experience in PVD preparation of thin films or coatings, in nanostructured and high-entropy materials, materials characterization and previous publications in peer-reviewed journals are an advantage.
