About our Team          

The School of Engineering & Physical Sciences has an international teaching and research reputation and close connection with the professional and industrial world of science, engineering and technology. 

We deliver teaching across 6 programmes: Chemistry; Physics; Electrical, Electronic & Computer Engineering; Chemical Engineering; Mechanical Engineering and Brewing & Distilling. In the 2016 National Student Survey Heriot-Watt University was ranked 35th in the UK and joint 3rd in Scotland with the University of Glasgow. 90% of our students were satisfied overall with their course in over half of the University's subject areas. At subject area level the School ranked in the top 10 UK universities for Chemistry and we were 1st in Scotland for Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering and 2nd in Scotland for Chemical Engineering.

Detailed Description          

An experienced Technical Services Manager is required to join a team of technical managers to provide a complete technical service that supports all teaching and research within the School. The post holder is required to take responsibility for all day-to-day aspects of building management, maintenance and security, space allocation, estate development and minor works, as well as facilities and laboratory services provision. This is a new post and will be responsible for, in the first instance,   the new GRID building. Assistance and demonstrating in undergraduate electronic and mechanical practical teaching classes is also required.

Key duties and responsibilities          

The post holder is required to:

  • Coordination of space, facilities and equipment for teaching and events within the allocated buildings providing day to day front line response to requests and issues, and, participate in emergency callout procedures - managing responses including shut down of services, incident management and rectification. 
  • Assist in the provision of the building induction for all new staff and students, including any training included within the induction process.
  • Implementation of building health & safety requirements as determined by the University and the  School Safety Committees including maintenance of mandatory safety records and facilitating inspections of the same.
  • Planning, arranging and participating in repairs and preventative maintenance to the building and its services, including monitoring, fault identification, inspection, repairs, escalation of issues as appropriate, cleaning, decoration and timely consumable replacement, ensuring that all work is undertaken in accordance with Health and Safety and mandatory codes of practice.
  • Assisting in the redevelopment and refurbishment projects, attending site and design meetings with Estates services as required and undertake and manage smaller, minor works projects as appropriate and with due consideration of University policies.
  • Assist in managing users of the buildings including technical staff in teaching and business areas and discuss issues with appropriate line managers.
  • Assist in the monitoring and maintaining expenditure of services/equipment/maintenance.
  • Give skills training and technical tuition in the use of relevant electronics and mechanical technologies in undergraduate and masters student practical classes and projects. Provide demonstrations, workshops and tutorials, alongside providing frequent feedback to students on their performance, and follow/refine/explain the design of set courses and their assessment.
  • Demonstrating equipment use and electronics/mechanical workshop theory to students.
  • Liaison with academic staff to ensure the provision of skills meets the demands of each programme/course and to communicate student performance.

Education, qualifications and experience          

Essential Criteria –

  • HNC/HND or equivalent in electronics/mechanical engineering or other relevant subject or substantial work experience in a similar role
  • Experience in buildings services and/or facilities management
  • Experience of front line trouble shooting of building services and equipment
  • Experience of gaining cooperation and managing staff in a non-line management position.
  • Ability to work flexible working hours - including member of emergency callout team.
  • Up to date health & safety knowledge for building services and good understanding of health & safety regulations and procedures and experience of Risk Assessment,  COSHH, Safe Systems of Work etc..
  • Expert level knowledge of electronic design skills, primarily , circuit design, circuit production, fault-finding and repair, with use of diagnostic equipment including is , power supplies, Signal Generators, oscilloscopes, soldering irons, small hand tools.
  • Expert level knowledge of mechanical workshop skills primarily small hand tools, 3D printers, laser cutters etc.
  • Experience of teaching and managing a class of students, including strong interpersonal skills, pedagogic knowledge and an ability to provide clear feedback and advice.
  • Good planning, team, communication and organisational skills
  • A positive, can-do, attitude with a willingness to accept responsibility.
  • A flexible approach and the ability to communicate at all levels.
  • Able to work effectively as an individual and flexibly as a member of a team to ensure an excellent service to staff and students. 
  • Some manual handling will be involved requiring fitness and physical effort.

Desirable Criteria

  • Electronics or Mechanical engineering degree or related discipline
  • Experience of radiation and lasers health and safety
  • An aptitude for IT including PCB CAD packages, coding and programming micro controllers

Hours of work – The Roleholder will be expected to be flexible in the hours worked covering a shift pattern of 8 am to 4 pm and 2pm to 10pm Monday to Friday on a rotational cycle working on average 35 hours per week.  Occasional work at weekends may be required for Open Days, student events etc.

The GRID building is a new concept in student training and variation to working practices will evolve over the coming semesters to allow the best student training contact for teaching development.
