Reporting to the Manager, HDR Candidature you will provide expert advice, support and manage complex issues throughout the lifecycle of a higher degree research candidate whilst maintaining strong relationships and support for school and faculty stakeholders within the policy and procedural framework of the University. Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop a high level of expertise and knowledge of University and government policies and procedures as they relate to HDR candidatures, admissions and scholarships.
  • Provide expert advice to students, supervisors and postgraduate coordinators on all aspects of research candidatures, admissions and scholarships.
  • Process routine and complex admission acceptances, commencing and continuing enrolment processes, candidature/scholarship variation requests and annual progress review forms in a timely way ensuring a high level of accuracy and professionalism.
  • Provide senior support to School Postgraduate Coordinators and Faculty Higher Degree Committees on all complex aspects of research candidature and scholarship administration.

Our 4,500+ Higher Degree Research (HDR) candidates are an essential part of the Research community and play a vital role in the University’s research culture, output, and performance. The UNSW Graduate Research School (GRS) is the central unit responsible for HDR candidates and supervisors. The GRS provides leadership, support and central administration for this cohort within the UNSW research community, as well as the research training leaders who work with them. This includes 3,000 supervisors, over 65 Faculty Postgraduate Coordinators, 9 Associate Deans (Research Training), and over 60 Faculty support staff. The GRS also supports strategic HDR programs including the flagship UNSW 2025 Strategy Scientia PhD Scholarship Scheme. 

About the successful applicant

You have a relevant degree and at least two years’ work experience in higher education or a similar field OR an equivalent combination of training and experience, as well as:

  • Proven ability to interpret, apply and clearly and concisely communicate complex policy and procedures to internal and external clients.
  • Demonstrated track record in using large databases to process information and extract data, and experience in analysing and interpreting student data.
  • Proven ability to remain calm and focussed under pressure in a high-volume environment and demonstrate a commitment to high quality, flexible and responsive customer service.
