The project is aimed to generate and characterize gene therapy reagents aimed at treating amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and fronto-temporal dementia (FTD). The aim is to optimise several different gene supplementation and knock-down strategies in rodent models of disease to determine which show most promise for clinical application. A number of molecular and histological biology techniques will be employed in this project using animal tissue and in vivo rodent experimentation. The work will be carried out at the Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute (Denmark Hill Campus, SE5 9RX).

The successful candidates will be part of a team working on an exciting new project to generate viral gene therapy reagents aimed at treating amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and fronto-temporal dementia (FTD). The aim is to optimise several different gene supplementation and knock-down strategies in rodent models of disease to determine which show most promise for clinical application. They will be responsible for stereotaxic injection of viral vectors, transcardial perfusion and tissue processing. They will oversee cryosectioning, microsectioning and subsequent staining, experience in rodent/sheep brain immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence is required, as well as the optimisation of new antibodies. They will also be responsible for microscope imaging such as confocal microscopy or slidescanner. Experience with imaging software such as Olyvia, Visiopharm, Harmony or related is highly recommended. In addition, the post holders will be expected to assist other junior researchers including PhD and MSc students.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 31 December 2022.
