Job Summary

The Undergraduate Admissions Counselor is a regular, full-time, benefits-eligible salaried position responsible for recruiting and evaluating candidates for undergraduate admission as well as carrying out other assigned projects as needed. This position reports to the Director of Admissions and works under the guidance of the Associate Directors.

Job Duties

  • Counsel students and conduct presentations about Caltech undergraduate life, admissions and financial aid policies/procedures to audiences on campus, in high schools, and at large off-campus venues
  • Plan and execute an effective recruitment travel plan that makes appropriate use of staff time, budget, and data to target the most promising candidates to Caltech
  • Travel as much as 4-6 weeks during the spring and fall months, including but not limited to out of state travel
  • Build and maintain relationships with high school counselors and alumni in an assigned fixed region, as well as with faculty, staff and other relevant stakeholders
  • Thoroughly read, critically evaluate, and recommend appropriate admission decisions on highly competitive applications
  • Carry out other admissions-related projects as assigned by the Director or an Associate Director

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required as well as familiarity with the activities of an undergraduate admissions office
  • Ability to work, and comfort with, diverse audiences
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Incumbent must be conscientious, proactive, self-motivated and a strong, positive team player
  • Must have the ability to participate in a fast-paced, creative, and success/deadline driven environment
  • Attention to detail, especially as it pertains to the holistic review of application materials
  • Exhibit professional behavior and excellent judgment in executing all activities of the office
  • Flexibility to travel by air, especially for several weeks in the fall, spring or summer months, to domestic locations
  • Must have the ability to manage several projects simultaneously while meeting aggressive deadlines
  • Knowledge of basic Microsoft office tools including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Flexibility to work beyond a typical 8am-5pm job, including evening and weekend projects
  • Possess or have the ability to obtain by the date of hire a valid California Driver’s License and maintain it throughout the course of employment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience with various social media and communication platforms
  • Experience planning events
  • Experience working with underrepresented and underserved student populations
  • Understanding and appreciation for a highly rigorous STEM education
