About the opportunity

The Faculty of Medicine and Health is the largest faculty in the University, and contains seven academic schools: Sydney Medical School, Sydney Dental School, Sydney School of Health Sciences (from Jan 2020), School of Medical Sciences, Sydney Nursing School, Sydney Pharmacy School and Sydney School of Public Health. Sydney Medical School includes ten clinical schools comprising seven metropolitan and three rural clinical schools on key campuses at Broken Hill, Dubbo & Orange and in the Northern Rivers. Each clinical school is a centre of clinical education and research, multi-professional and multi-disciplinary. Clinical schools have strong collaborative relationships with the health services within which they are located.
The Chair of Anaesthetics is a leadership position within the Sydney Medical School’s Discipline of Anaesthesia. The incoming Chair will be ideally placed to make seminal contributions across all dimensions of Anaesthetics activities (research, education and the clinical care of patients) and will interact with major stakeholders and affiliates across the school and faculty.
The Chair is expected to pursue academic research of national and international significance and to play a major role in shaping the direction of translational research in anaesthesia. The Chair will also provide leadership in medical education programs in collaboration with the Head of the Discipline of Anaesthesia and will contribute to teaching at all relevant levels. The Chair will provide compelling and accurate content knowledge and effective and inspiring supervision and mentoring of Fellows and PhD students. Higher degree student supervision will be supported within one or more of Sydney Medical School’s Clinical Schools.
The Chair will have a clinical role in one of the University’s teaching hospitals to be determined in discussion with the successful applicant. While the Chair will be located primarily in one of Sydney Medical School’s Clinical Schools in association with its partner Local Health District, it will provide leadership in academic anaesthesia across all seven metropolitan clinical schools and all three rural clinical schools.
Term and remuneration
The successful applicant will be offered a full-time fixed term appointment for a period of up to 5 years, subject to the completion of satisfactory probation period for new appointees. Renewal of the appointment for a further period may be offered subject to need and funding. The successful candidate will be offered an attractive University remuneration package. Remuneration for clinical activity at the relevant teaching hospital would be negotiated through officers of the relevant Local Health District and would be subject to a separate employment contract.
