A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and highly motivated manager to join the University’s Advanced Computing Research Centre (ACRC), one of the UK’s leading High Performance Computing (HPC) and Research Data Storage (RDS) providers. The ACRC manages six HPC clusters and a central multi-petabyte research data store.
The HPC clusters have over 1200 HPC users and there are more than 3,000 users of the Research Data Storage Facility, so there is a large user community in both areas. The ACRC is a growing team currently with 22 members and is essential to the delivery of the University’s research objectives.
Facilitation of the HPC and RDS user communities is a key aspect of the role, with regular liaison with research groups across all disciplines, exploring how their research can be supported and cutting edge research enabled. This is enhanced by regular user surveys to gain feedback and understand trends. This understanding of researchers’ requirements feeds into development of ACRC strategy and the future direction of the ACRC and the role holder works closely with the Director of Advanced Computing in planning and setting strategy.
The role takes a lead in policy development and management, particularly for the RDSF, addressing issues such as data management, ethics and security. The role holder is an active participant in several operational committees and decision making boards and is secretary to the ACRC’s strategic board.
The role has responsibility for managing ACRC budgets and staffing and recruitment and is line manager to the Research Facilitator in the team.
The role requires a wide range of skills reflecting the need to manage a complex and varied workload in a dynamic environment. Strong organisational skills are essential together with excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Analytical skills are needed for working with a range of management information and use surveys to identify key issues and how we can address them. People skills are another essential as the role is a link between users, the team and other parts of Professional Services so the ability to work with a range of people at all levels of the organisation is key.
We will be looking for candidates to have skills in some of the following areas:
- Experience of working in a HE or research environment.
- Experience of working with a computing team or a computing qualification.
- The ability to acquire a strategic understanding of issues and how they affect the work of the ACRC.
