The School of Engineering at the University of Aberdeen is a research-intensive academic unit engaged in fundamental and applied research across five Engineering disciplines: Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Electronic, Mechanical, and Petroleum. 85% of the School’s research output was ranked as world leading or internationally excellent in the 2014 UK Research Excellence Framework exercise (REF2014). In 2018, the National Decommissioning Centre (NDC) was established through a partnership with the Oil & Gas Technology Centre (OGTC), and with funding from the UK and Scottish Governments. The NDC builds on the original proposal within the Aberdeen City Region Deal to leverage the combined capabilities of academia, industry and other organisations to help create competitive advantage in decommissioning within the global energy sector.

Striving to work towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals of protecting the planet and ensure prosperity for all, the School of Engineering at the University of Aberdeen seeks to appoint a Senior Lecturer or Lecturer in Energy Transitions to perform research in the engineering fundamentals that underpin various aspects of transition from fossil fuel generation to low carbon energy systems. We invite applications from individuals with expertise in interdisciplinary cutting-edge research, outstanding communication skills and a passion for engaged and innovative teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The post holder is expected to work closely with the NDC and the OGTC and a newly to be appointed Chair.

We are particularly seeking individuals with a PhD in Engineering or related discipline with an excellent research track record in one or more of the following areas:

  • Low carbon, high efficiency energy systems;
  • Energy conversion, transport and storage;
  • Hydrogen production from renewable resources;
  • Hydrogen distribution and storage;
  • Solar energy;
  • Geothermal energy;
  • Wind and tidal energy;
  • Biomass conversion technologies;
  • Carbon capture, sequestration and utilisation;
  • Fuel cell technologies;
  • Energy productivity;
  • Decommissioning.

For appointments made at Lecturer / Senior Lecture Level, salary will be at the appropriate point on the salary scale (Lecturer Level £41,526 - £49,552 per annum; Senior Lecturer level £52,559 - £59,135 per annum) with placement according to qualifications and experience.
