Student Affairs comprises more than 29 offices that provide undergraduate and graduate students with a range of services, opportunities, and resources. The division is focused on equity and inclusion, community and belonging, mental health and well-being, and integrative learning. In the second year of Vice Provost Susie Brubaker-Cole’s leadership, Student Affairs will be realigned into five areas, each led by an associate vice provost and designed to reinforce student care, support, and learning; amplify programmatic alignment and synergies across the division; and ensure organizational effectiveness through clear performance objectives, consistent policies and measurable outcomes. The Director of Finance and Budget Management reports to the Associate Vice Provost for Administration and Shared Services. The Director manages staff responsible for complex finance and control functions and leads the overall financial operations, annual budget planning and accounting cycle for Student Affairs. The position includes a liaison role with the University Budget Office and with Financial Management Services. The Director leads monthly meetings with Student Affairs finance administrators who support a range of offices with diverse business models developed to meet the needs of their units. The Director works with these finance administrators to plan budgets and develop and ensure financial controls and reporting. The Director also works with the Director of Human Resources in Student Affairs on salary planning, funding for re-classifications and other compensation matters. An analyst position reports to the Director and together they project past, current, and future financials in order to make recommendations to Student Affairs leadership.

Your Key Responsibilities include*:

  • Manage the work of a financial analyst, make hiring decisions, provide coaching, training and mentoring, manage performance, determine staffing needs, develop and ensure succession planning and financial strategy development within Student Affairs.
  • Establish operational objectives and assignments, plan, direct and monitor all budgets for areas of responsibility, provide guidance on business operations and administration of several functional areas.
  • Identify and resolve unique problems of substantial significance that affect Student Affairs as a whole as well as in immediate units. Lead expert analysis of financial trends and patterns.
  • Manage the division's financial activities and structure; develop system and procedure requirements to support the financial reporting for the division.
  • Lead financial reporting and forecasting, and the annual budget and year end closing process.
  • Develop and recommend budget strategies and plans for formulation of operating budgets. Assist in the review and analyses of unit budget requests and the preparation of the division’s annual budget request.
  • Contribute to designing, developing and delivering complex policies and procedures with both short and long term impact.
  • Collaborate with other colleagues on school/unit projects; design and execute an effective system of internal controls for areas of responsibility; establish operational objectives to support the university's stewardship of resources.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Master's degree and six years relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Demonstrated knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and fund accounting preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of Oracle or other business financial systems.
  • Advanced understanding of financial principles.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively present information to internal and external audiences, client groups and all levels of management.
  • Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information.
  • Strong leadership and management skills with previous experience managing people, delegating workload and providing direction/corrections as necessary.
  • Demonstrated competency in project management of a high volume of work, some of which is cyclical.
  • Knowledge of procurement needs, including sole-sourcing, cost analyses, vendor requirements, and small business reporting.
  • Ability to interpret complex fiscal policies, assimilate information from a wide range of resources and act as a mentor and resource to others.
  • Ability to manage nuance and to engage with varied types of financial modeling and business planning.
  • Ability to work extended hours during peak cycles and travel to school/unit sites across university.
