AIIM RESEARCH FACILITY 

  • PhD Opportunity (with stipend), novel battery systems, Australian Institute for Innovative Materials (AIIM)

The opportunity

The Australian Institute for Innovative Materials (AIIM) is the flagship research institute at the University of Wollongong with a focus on multidisciplinary materials science fundamental and applied research. The Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) is supporting a PhD opportunity focussing on the development of a novel battery system based on shear thickening fluid electrolytes. The project will tackle safety issues and key challenges that face battery technology. The Intelligent Polymer Research Institute (IPRI) will host this research within the AIIM and there will be opportunities to work closely with DSTG scientists. The PhD candidate will be jointly supervised by Dr Caiyun Wang, see profile https://scholars.uow.edu.au/display/caiyun_wang and Dr Jie Ding at DSTG.

The research will be undertaken, on a full time basis, at the AIIM facility at the Innovation Campus in Wollongong, New South Wales. https://aiim.uow.edu.au/index.html. 

Remuneration

The 2019 Research Training Program (RTP) living allowance stipend is AUD $27,596 per annum (indexed annually), tax free for three years and is offered as part of this PhD opportunity.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold relevant first or upper second class Honours degree or Master degree (or equivalent) in Materials Chemistry, Chemistry Science, Materials Engineering or a related field. Knowledge of batteries and electrolytes would be an advantage. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an enthusiasm for team work are essential. The ability to work independently with a strong desire for planning and multi-tasking to meet deadlines and progress the research is required. Applicants must be an Australian citizen.
