Role Description

Established in 1961, the Welding Engineering and Laser Processing Centre (WELPC) is the only specialist welding research centre in UK academia. The Centre provides fundamental, strategic and applied research in the field of welding science and engineering along with postgraduate studies. The Centre has established internationally leading positions in the fields of additive manufacture, laser welding and processing, residual stress management and advanced arc welding processes.

Through the research and development in wire additive manufacture (WAM) process the WELPC has established a world leading position in Additive Manufacture (AM) of large scale engineering structures. The research programme within the centre has generated a large amount of industrial and research interest. The programme’s vision is to transform metal additive manufacture, by pioneering new high build rate wire-based processes to produce net-shape large-scale engineering structures.  To support the WAM research programme we are commissioning a new £1.4M WAM research facility featuring multiple robots, CNC systems and multiple energy sources including a 10kW and 2 x 6kW laser systems.

We are seeking to recruit a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer to support our rapidly expanding research and teaching activities in Additive Manufacture (AM) – primarily focussed on wire based processes. The successful candidate will join a supportive team environment, and have the opportunity to grow and develop their research area in the WAM programme, and their career in due course.

The technology covers many disciplines; processes, materials, robotics and CNC systems, process monitoring and control, theoretical modelling and software for control/planning.  The applicant may have specialised knowledge in any of these areas but we see major opportunities in robotic systems, process monitoring/control and theoretical modelling and are looking to grow these activities.

A key aspect of the role will be generating income through the writing of proposals and developing your own specialist research area to support the overall WAM programme. The applicant will be expected to fulfil a major role in delivering and/or managing the new course on Metal Additive Manufacture and supporting teaching activities as well as supervising researchers and students.

You will need to demonstrate a track record of conducting high quality research which has resulted in the production of high quality papers.  Excellent interpersonal skills will be necessary to liaise with work colleagues and academic partners as well as supervise researchers and students.

You will need to have a PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Computer Science, Robotics or Mechanical Engineering (or similar area), ideally involving laser or arc processing/welding. You should have a demonstrable track record of high quality research or technology development and experience of working with industry.  Experience and/or qualifications in teaching are highly desirable.

For an informal discussion, please contact Professor Stewart Williams, Professor of Welding Science and Engineering, on (T); +44 (0)1234 754693 or (E); s.williams@cranfield.ac.uk

At Cranfield, we value Diversity and Inclusion, and aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together harmoniously with dignity and respect and realise their full potential. We actively consider flexible working options such as part-time, compressed or flexible hours and/or an element of homeworking, and commit to exploring the possibilities for each role.

To further demonstrate our commitment to progressing gender diversity in STEM, we are members of WES & Working Families, and sponsors of International Women in Engineering Day.

Expected interview date: Week commencing 14 October 2019
