Job Details

The Department of Global Health & Social Medicine is seeking two Postdoctoral Research Associates to work with Dr Carlo Caduff on the Wellcome Trust Investigator Award project “Grid Oncology: Remaking Cancer Care in India.”

In 2012 India’s flagship cancer hospital, Tata Memorial in Mumbai responded to the rapidly growing number of patients and launched a network of cancer centres. The National Cancer Grid of India was established to decentralize, standardize and digitalize oncology and develop new forms of treatment relevant for low- and middle-income countries. The research project analyses the emergence of the grid as a powerful new actor that seeks to redraw the map of cancer care in India.

The two Postdoctoral Research Associates will work closely with the Principal Investigator, Dr Carlo Caduff to support the achievement of the project goals. The post holders will each be responsible for one of the three work packages in the Grid Oncology project and will conduct ethnographic research in cancer hospitals in either Assam or Uttar Pradesh.

The Postdoctoral Research Associates will be involved in conducting empirical research in India, and writing and contributing to project publications and dissemination of research findings. The post holders will be active members of the Department of Global Health & Social Medicine and the Culture, Medicine & Power Research Group at King’s College London. They will contribute to the academic community through publications and reports as well as conference and workshop presentations.

The successful candidates will have ethnographic research experience in India at the doctoral or postdoctoral level. They will have an ability to carry out fieldwork and conduct high quality research. They will have knowledge of medical anthropology, and/or anthropology of science, and/or science & technology studies.

We are looking for two highly motivated individuals with a PhD in anthropology / sociology and language fluency in at least one Indian language, in addition to excellent English communication and writing skills.

The two posts are full-time positions for 4 years. The Postdoctoral Research Associates will be based in the Department of Global Health & Social Medicine, located at Bush House in central London. The posts will involve field research in India as well as travel for conferences and workshops in Europe and North America.

The successful candidates will benefit from working in an international research environment, with opportunities to gain teaching experience and establish academic networks.

The selection process will include a presentation and a panel interview. Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit three letters of recommendation and a writing sample.
