Head of the Institute of Education

Competitive salary and benefits

The University of Derby is a modern university with a modern outlook. Everything we do is driven by delivering excellence and opportunities for our students, our staff and our region. We are a University of first choice for students who want a caring, aspirational environment where they can equip themselves for the career they choose. With TEF Gold and a strong reputation for vocationally relevant programmes, we offer our students unparalleled opportunities to engage in real-world learning alongside their studies.

We are now seeking to appoint the Head of the Institute of Education. The Institute is part of the College of Arts, Humanities and Education and specialises in Initial Teacher Education and EYTS, Childhood Studies, Education Studies and SEND, School Direct and Post 14 and Postgraduate Studies. We focus on preparing our students for the challenges of 21st century teaching and learning through a suite of current, topical and relevant programmes. Ofsted rated our Primary Education and Further Education (Post-14) courses as 'Outstanding' in 2015, and in the Newly Qualified Teacher Survey our students rated their training as among the best in the country.

As Head, you will be responsible for leading, enhancing and growing the academic and business development of the Institute, ensuring that its programmes, academic delivery and research inspire, have impact and support the College plans, the University’s corporate aims and the national education and governmental policy context. You will also develop the Institute’s external profile, networking with relevant individuals and organisations across the education landscape.

You will lead by example in academic practice, scholarly activity, academic enterprise and professional engagement and work collaboratively with colleagues across the School on enhancement action planning. With proven leadership skills, a strong track record of academic achievement and experience of delivering sustainable change, you will also bring a deep commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

This is an outstanding opportunity to lead an Institute with an ambitious plan of renewal that will locate it as a national leader in professional practice and policy, research and academic studies in Education.
