Position Description

A postdoctoral position is available in the Hui lab to study organismal energy metabolism in mammals. The Hui lab is at the Department of Genetics and Complex Diseases of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The strong focus on metabolism research in the Department and the general excellence of biomedical research in the area provide an ideal environment for postdoctoral training in metabolism and metabolic diseases. https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/genetics-and-complex-diseases/

The Hui lab takes the approach of quantitative systems biology to understand energy metabolism in healthy and diseased states. Specifically, we perform in vivo isotopic tracing by combining animal experiments with LC-MS measurements, and infer metabolic fluxes from the isotopic labeling data. The resulting flux information reflects the metabolic activity of the animal and is thus of great value for understanding the studied physiological state.

The lab focuses on physiologic states with altered energy metabolism, specifically, the energy-surplus state (obesity) and the energy-deficient state (cachexia). We believe these two seemingly unrelated diseases are two sides of the same coin, and studying them simultaneously offers the advantage of cross-checking hypotheses and predictions generated from studying each one. Basic Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in biological sciences, biophysics, biochemistry, or related filed
  • Motived to understand metabolic diseases
  • Excellent communication, writing, and organizational skills

Additional Qualifications

Expertise in the following is highly valued:

  • Animal models of diseases (e.g., obesity, diabetes, cancer)
  • Animal experiments (e.g., genetic, surgical)
  • Metabolomics, mass spectrometry
