About the opportunity

The Faculty of Medicine and Health is the largest faculty in the University, and the Sydney Nursing School is one of seven schools within the faculty. Nursing at the University of Sydney is one of the top QS (subject) ranked nursing schools in Australia and strives to sustain a vibrant, respectful environment in which students and staff engage collaboratively in education and research that impacts on national and international policy and practice. The school will work as part of a large faculty which seeks to graduate outstanding individuals who are exemplary health professionals.
We are seeking to appoint a distinguished academic as Head of School and Dean who will join the leadership team of the Faculty of Medicine Health. The school teaches approximately 1,200 undergraduate and 700 postgraduate coursework students. There are around 75 higher degree research students. The school’s major research themes include cancer, chronic disease and ageing, infection and immunity, injury and acute illness, and mental health.
The successful applicant will be responsible for the school’s academic education and research performance outcomes that support the overall faculty strategic goals, maintaining accreditation standards (where appropriate), the student experience, managing the school’s financial sustainability, meeting financial targets and the workplace culture. The position has formal financial and people delegations and is responsible for effective decision making to ensure financial sustainability. The successful applicant will contribute to the attraction, appointment, development and retention of talented staff who are able to attract and develop talented students. The successful applicant will also help to promote the school’s, the faculty’s and the University’s reputation for excellence and its national and international academic standing.
The successful applicant must have a wide network of established relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders, that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of the school, faculty and University.
Term and remuneration
The initial appointment will be for 5 years with the opportunity for renewal subject to assessment of performance.
The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package.
The University has engaged executive search firm Heidrick & Struggles to assist with this appointment. Heidrick & Struggles will support the selection committee to identify the widest possible field of qualified candidates and to assess candidates against the requirements for the role.
