UNSW Medicine is a national leader in learning, teaching and research, with close affiliations to a number of Australia’s finest hospitals, research institutes and health care organisations. The Centre for Primary Health Care and Equity (CPHCE) is a UNSW research centre operating from four locations: on campus at Randwick, and at Liverpool, Darlinghurst and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. CPHCE’s Mission is to contribute to better, fairer health and health care in the community by conducting research, evaluation and development that strengthens primary health care and addresses health inequities.

The Health Equity Research and Development Unit (HERDU) is a partnership between UNSW and Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) and is based at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. The Health Equity Research Fellow will work with SLHD staff, disadvantaged population groups and other stakeholders to strengthen key partnerships and conduct research and evaluate strategies which improve access, equity and health outcomes in their communities. The Research Fellow will also work with other research hubs within the UNSW Centre for Primary Health Care and Equity.

About the role:

  • $130K-$149K plus 17% superannuation and leave loading (pro-rata)
  • Fixed Term until end of 2020 with extension subject to funding.
  • Part-time (21 hours/week)

As a Research Fellow you will manage a strategic program of health equity research and evaluation projects in the Sydney Local Health District region; secure external funding through preparation of grant applications, proposals and tenders for commissioned research and publish research and scientific papers; you will contribute to education training programs on access and equity, social determinants of health and working with local communities and disadvantaged populations; maintain and extend key external partnerships for SLHD as well as work with other sectors such as local government and community groups. Mentoring and supervision of staff and students is an integral part of the role.

About you:

To be successful in the role you will have:

  • A PhD in Public Health or related area and a track record of research output, as evidenced by peer review publications.
  • Demonstrated ability to attract funding for research and evaluation projects.
  • Evidence of an increasing trajectory of research excellence and productivity and of potential to lead research projects independently
  • Strong understanding of health equity issues and the health needs of hard to reach communities such as migrant and marginalised communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualise and implement research and evaluation in areas relevant to health services research, and to develop these into research protocols
  • Demonstrated ability to establish, build and sustain partnerships including working with government and non-government sectors
