About the opportunity 

The Lecturer, Student Learning & Communications (Education-Focused) will design, deliver and evaluate teaching and learning in the area of academic language and learning within the Learning Centre in the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) portfolio.

This role is your opportunity to:

  • provide high-quality teaching and learning experiences for students at undergraduate, honours, masters, and HDR levels (this includes workshops in the area of academic communication)
  • design and deliver quality academic language and learning support experiences, including e-learning, flipped and blended learning, that support student needs and meet co-curriculum requirements
  • design and delivery of curriculum embedded language and learning support, working in collaboration with other Learning Centre staff
  • apply scholarship and knowledge of contemporary pedagogical practice to innovate education
  • work collaboratively with faculty academics to embed academic communication skills into their units of study to better support students’ academic language and learning development
  • contribute to the education and administrative activities of the Learning Centre.

Education-focused roles are a specialised category of academic engagement reserved for talented educators with a passion for, and demonstrated excellence in, pedagogical practice and design In this role you will be  expected to make a significant contribution to teaching and learning practice, design and evaluation within the Portfolio and will be on a trajectory towards leadership in educational design and delivery. The majority of your contribution will be to education (80%), the remainder of your workload allocation will be available for research.

About you

  • a PhD in an academic field relevant to the discipline or a Masters by research or coursework in an area appropriate to academic language and learning, such as Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Academic literacies, higher education
  • the proven ability, commitment and passion for engaging in scholarly activities to inform innovative pedagogical practice in the area of academic language and learning, drawing upon relevant theories such as systemic-functional linguistics, genre-based theories of language, academic literacies, English for academic purposes, TESOL
  • experience in teaching and learning in a tertiary environment, with an emphasis on settings relevant to academic language and learning
  • demonstrated success in designing, implementing and evaluating teaching and learning initiatives in the co-curriculum and a demonstrated capacity to collaborate with faculty teachers in curriculum-based support for academic language and learning
  • knowledge of functional theories of language and learning and their application to the development of students’ academic literacy
  • demonstrated experience in the design and use of e learning, blended learning technologies to enrich student language and learning
  • a developing network of relationships with key academic and professional stakeholders
  • experience in coordinating team activities and managing projects
  • demonstrated capacity to stimulate, actively engage and educate an audience using a range of media
  • a research program in teaching and learning with the preferred research areas of academic language and learning, applied linguistics, linguistics, higher education.
