Based in the School of Science, Engineering & Design, you will be a core member of the School Management Team, providing leadership for a Department which delivers outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate courses and excellent research in Aeronautical, Civil, Chemical, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. Appointment as Head of Department is also available at Professorial level for candidates who are able to demonstrate outstanding leadership of research aligned to the Department’s sepcialisms. The Department is looking to build on its success in REF 2014  (for results in the General Engineering Units of Assessment see https://www.tees.ac.uk/sections/research/research_ref.cfm) and the new appointment will pay a key role, working closely with the Associate Dean (Research and Innovation), in achieving this.

In this role you will contribute to strategic planning for both the School and Department, working closely with the Dean and Associate Deans to ensure that Engineering continues to grow and excel as a research rich Department. You will provide robust vision and leadership underpinned by a sound understanding of the higher education environment and current and future challenges facing Engineering. 

Candidates for the position must be leading researchers in an area aligned to the Department’s current expertise with an outstanding track-record of internationally excellent publications and ambitious research plans for the future. A good understanding of the external research funding environment is essential and a record of successful grant capture desirable. Candidates for the Professorial role will be expected to have national and international recognition, reputation and profile for outstanding work in their field. Professorial candidates must be experienced leaders of researchers aligned to at least one of the Department’s research groups.

The postholder will develop external and cross-disciplinary collaborations and partnerships, setting high expectations and creating a nurturing environment for staff, postgraduate and early career researchers whilst setting clear priorities for the Department. The successful candidate will have responsibility for the delivery of an engaging and enriching research-led curriculum and the development of undergraduate and postgraduate students as global and civic citizens within an academic School with a track record of research excellence, industry engagement and real world impact.
