Position Focus:

Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment for Pain Management (SBIRT-PM) is a study intervention designed to reduce pain and risky substance use. This person will provide telephone-delivered SBIRT-PM counseling to Veterans applying for Compensation for painful musculoskeletal conditions as part of a pragmatic clinical trial.

This involves:

  1. Within the context of a clinical research study, works with VA Medical Center Staff and PACT team to engage enrolled Veterans in early, multi-modal non-pharmacological pain treatment.
  2. Uses motivational interviewing techniques to motivate those who misuse substances to change this problematic behavior.
  3. Works with PACT team after the initial counseling session to support Veteran patient outcomes.
  4. Document services delivered and assist with administrative reports concerning service delivery.
  5. Prepare clinical summaries.
  6. Plans and schedules own work based on broadly defined objectives and priorities.
  7. Attends individual supervision meetings, group and individual training meetings, and completes continuing education.

Essential Duties

  1. Must obtain informed consent from participants.
  2. Counsels individuals, groups, or families to help them understand problems, define goals, and develop realistic action plans.
  3. Collects information about clients through interviews, observation, and tests.
  4. Guides clients in the development of skills and strategies for dealing with their problems.
  5. Develops and implements treatment plans based on clinical experience and knowledge.
  6. Maintains confidentiality of records relating to clients' treatment.
  7. Completes and maintains client-related paperwork, including federal and state mandated forms, client diagnostic records, and progress notes.
  8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Master's Degree in Psychology, or relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Self-motivated and high level of initiative and comprehension.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with attention to detail.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Familiarity with VA healthcare system and the unique needs of veterans. 

Preferred Licenses or Certifications:

Licensure in the State of Connecticut in relevant field (e.g. social work, counselor, mental health counselor, family therapist).
