Job description

The University of Central Lancashire is a vibrant, international and modern University, combining a growing reputation for research and academic excellence with an entrepreneurial spirit and a real understanding of the demands of the commercial world.

The Faculty of Science and Technology is leading a new university-wide opportunity in the formation of a centre of excellence in the field of data innovation. This post is to be the inaugural Head of this Centre.

The centre will utilise data science and analytics to address public and commercial challenges. Working alongside the newly launched UCLan Research Centres, this centre will be interdisciplinary in nature.  We anticipate immediate project opportunities with partners in the health, engineering and public service sectors, with pump-priming funding to support them.

We are seeking an outstanding leader with deep data innovation experience to lead the development of this new centre. Experience in the above areas of application would be desirable. We require a dynamic, innovative and entrepreneurial individual that reflects the personality of this Faculty and institution. You will bring technical and professional engagement skills, underpinned by an internationally-leading track record in the field. Experience of working on challenges in the above sectors would be beneficial.

You will provide leadership for the operation, management and delivery of research and enterprise activity to grow the Centre into a sustainable and productive unit. The post requires experience in the development and implementation of strategy and policy in areas pertinent to the centre, with candidates combining excellent communication and networking skills and a record of successful leadership and management.

You will meet the University's criteria at either Professor or Reader level under either of our research or innovation and enterprise tracks. You must demonstrate significant experience in income generation and high-quality research and enterprise output, as well as experience that evidences the ability to support outstanding education in this field.

The University of Central Lancashire is committed to supporting your personal development and providing an inclusive working environment. UCLan welcomes other under-represented groups, as such we particularly encourage applications to support our diversity agenda.

Application is by way of the on-line form against the attached Person Specification and Job Description. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview and required to give a presentation.

UCLan Values

Company

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) was founded in Preston in 1828 as the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge.  Since those early days it has transitioned into one of the UK’s leading, modern universities with a student body comprising some 120 nations and an overall learning community approaching 38,000.

Throughout its development ‘Ex solo ad solem’, or in translation, ‘From the Earth to the Sun’, has been its motto – helping talented people from all walks of life to make the most of their potential. Staff at UCLan pride themselves on putting the needs of students at the centre of everything they do and in 2014 this shared core value was highlighted when the University achieved IIP Gold status.

In 2015 the Centre for World University Rankings placed UCLan in the top 3.8 percent of all worldwide universities and over the coming years UCLan’s £200 million Campus Masterplan development will create a truly world-class educational environment that will propel the University to new levels of excellence.
