The Course Coordinator (CC) for the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL) provides key administrative and academic support to all CS large courses working alongside innovative professors and course assistants that are teaching these classes.

The course coordinator’s role is to lead and oversee the administration of large classes thereby freeing up the professors’ time and allowing them to focus on preparing and delivering the curriculum. The work includes setting up the course logistics before the quarter begins, managing the teaching assistants, and ensuring the courses finish smoothly. Work flexibility is needed as there are times when the course coordinator is required to be available late in the evenings or on weekends, especially for grading sessions, midterms and responding to questions from faculty and course assistants.

Your responsibilities include:

Teaching Team Management (40%)

  • Conduct interviews and hire course assistants for the courses.
  • Organize office hours and training sessions for the course assistants.
  • Assign duties to course assistants based on their strengths.
  • Create a weekly plan and track weekly progress of the course.
  • Oversee grading sessions.

Course Management 40%

  • Establish course policies like late day extensions, incomplete grades, etc.
  • Help with student grievances and assist students with special needs.
  • Work with students to ensure course deadlines are met.
  • Invite project suggestions from research groups across the school.
  • Conduct a mid­quarter survey and propose changes to the course based on the survey feedback.
  • Report any honor code violations.
  • Work with internal university departments to organize poster sessions and midterm exams.
  • Review student course evaluations and present the findings to the stakeholders.

Communication 20%

  • Oversee announcements that go on Piazza or the course website.
  • Collaborate with various university departments to bring project ideas into the class.
  • Promote poster sessions via advertising and inviting other guests from industry.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Basic analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Relevant computer systems/technology experience.
  • Understanding of financial transactions.
  • Ability to learn and understand compliance with legal, financial, student affairs and university policies and external regulations.
  • In addition, preferred requirements include:
  • Willingness to learn about the course you are going to coordinate. In this case, courses like Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing with Deep Learning and Artificial Intelligence: Principles and Techniques.
  • Knowledge of teaching tools like Piazza, Gradescope, Canvas, handling of spreadsheets etc.
  • Experience planning and organizing large scale poster sessions.
  • Desire to work with students to help make them successful.
