Location: Mile End
Closing date: 29-Aug-2019

Overview:

Applications are invited from outstanding theoretical / corpus linguists combining an excellent background in theoretical linguistics (syntax or  semantics) with experience in corpus annotation, from designing annotation schemes to carry out annotation to supervising other annotators, for a  Postdoctoral Research Assistant position in DALI, a project funded by the European Research Council (ERC) on using games-with-a-purpose to collect very large datasets to support research in the linguistics and interpretation of anaphoric expression/coreference.

The positions will be funded by the ERC Advanced Grant DALI; Details can be found at http://dali.eecs.qmul.ac.uk/

The main responsibility of the post will be to contribute to annotating the data about anaphora and anaphoric ambiguity already collected using the Phrase Detectives game (over 4.5 million judgments) and those that will be collected through a range of games under development, to push forward our understanding of the linguistics of anaphora, of disagreement in language, and to support the development of computational models of anaphora resolution. The candidate will also contribute to refining the annotation schemes used in the project and help coordinating the activities of other annotators. He/she will lead and co-author a range of outputs of the project; and contribute to the dissemination of research findings to a range of stakeholders and audiences.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD (or equivalent qualification/experience) in theoretical Linguistics or a related topic. A strong linguistic background, in particular in the areas of Syntax and Semantics is essential, as is experience with corpus annotation.

Familiarity with annotation tools and computational tools for processing corpora, such as Perl or Python, a definite plus. The candidate is also expected to have excellent analysis and abstraction skills, and an interest in working in a research environment.

The post is fixed term appointment for 5 months or until 31 March 2020 (whichever is shorter), with an expected start date of 1 November 2019.  The starting salary range will be £33,615 - £39,483 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
