About the post  

A Servers and Storage Officer is required by the Data Centre Services group within IT Services to help maintain and support essential enterprise university IT.  This is a key role within the Data Centre Services group based at Mile End who are responsible for over 800 servers providing a diverse range of services to staff and students.

This is a challenging and important position for a bright, motivated and enthusiastic senior systems administrator. It is expected that the successful candidate will make key operational and development contributions to our college-wide enterprise storage infrastructure as well as contributing to other areas within the group.

Candidates should have a good degree in computer science or a related subject and have professional experience of enterprise storage systems administration in a modern multi-OS environment. Strong skills and experience in the following skillsets are essential:

  • VMware vCenter, ESXi 6.0 or 6.5
  • Windows server 2012 / 2012 R2 / 2016
  • Enterprise level SAN: FC and FCoE configuration
  • File services offering CIFS, NFS
  • Blade chassis management and blade configuration
  • Active Directory 2008 R2 / 2012 R2
  • VMware Horizon View 7
  • VMware Virtual Networking and Distributed Switching/VLAN configuration
  • Experience of common protocols TCP/IP, SMTP, HTTP, DNS and LDAP
  • Netapp Clustered Data ONTAP 9

In addition, skills and experience in the following areas are desirable:

  • Microsoft SCCM and SCOM
  • Commvault backup or similar enterprise backup systems.
  • VMware Site Recovery Manager
  • VMware NSX
  • Powershell scripting


The post is full time and permanent. Salary will be in the range £37,411 to £41,682 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
