Job description

Pathway: Research pathway

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic new team member as a Lecturer in Financial Services on our Research pathway (refer to criteria here) who is excellent at teaching and has a strong research profile with skills in quantitative methods.

Edinburgh Napier University is a leading, modern university with a reputation and impact that stretches far beyond our shores. We are an inclusive University with strong links to industry and an 'applied' focus that sets us apart. Our strategy is set around four key pillars of growing our academic reputation; delivering an excellent personalised student experience; internationalising our work; and build innovation, enterprise and citizenship.

About the school

The Business School is one of the largest modern Business Schools in Scotland and at the leading edge of innovation, with a strong academic reputation in undergraduate, postgraduate, executive education, and business research. It has an established track record of a high level of engagement and collaborative working with business and professional networks.

The Business School is focussed on developing employable (and self-employable) graduates who will drive economic growth both at home and abroad. We have strong and developing links with business through research-led teaching, practice based classroom activities, student placements, business support, research and consultancy. To learn more about our Business School, watch this short video.

You will join the Accountancy, Finance & Law Subject Group in the School.  The group offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.  The Financial Services subject area delivers an undergraduate BA (Hons) Financial Services degree on campus in Edinburgh and in both Hong Kong and mainland China. We also offer MSc International Finance and MSc Financial Technology programme on campus with the later also planned to launch in Hong Kong in 2020. We are keen to expand our Financial Services provision in response to the significant changes in the financial sector particularly in the areas of financial technology, data analytics, cyber security and artificial intelligence as well as the growing regulatory requirements.

Our BA (Hons) Accounting programme is accredited by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) as well as attracting exemptions from the other major professional accountancy bodies including ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA and HKICPA (in Hong Kong) and our LLB is accredited by the Law Society of Scotland. The National Student Survey for 2019 rated the Finance subject area at 94% for overall student satisfaction.

The role

We are seeking to appoint a lecturer in the area of banking/credit risk or pensions/asset management/investment with strong quantitative skills, although consideration will be given to outstanding candidates in other fields of financial services. You will be responsible for developing, designing and delivering teaching and student centred learning underpinned by academic scholarship and professional practice, within your assigned areas of responsibility.

You will engage in programme development, alongside supervising dissertation students. The opportunity also exists for the right candidate to undertake a high profile programme leadership role.

You will be required to conduct individual and collaborative research projects, contributing to the research profile within your School, leading to the production of high quality research outputs/outcomes.

You will also contribute to the University's objective of growing our academic reputation for research-informed student learning.

There are opportunities to teach in China and Hong Kong so this role will be ideal for someone who likes international travel, cultures, and this role presents opportunities to develop your own research area.

Who we are looking for

In addition to the role profile, the following criteria are essential:

  • A doctoral level qualification in a relevant discipline.
  • Evidence of an academic research profile, alongside a commitment to sustained continuous professional/academic development.
  • Evidence of innovative teaching and learning practice and experience.
  • Sufficient breadth and depth of experience in specialism to develop high quality teaching/ learning and research projects.
  • Strong quantitative skills
  • Some travel will be required as part of our transnational education provision.
