Working under the direction of the Clinical Nurse Manager of the Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences clinic, provides direct patient care to patients and support to physicians. Performs assessment of patients, and advises on treatment and course of action by having knowledge of nursing care standards and principles. Manages medication refill requests and medication requiring prior authorizations. Provides support for the administration of IV infusions, injections and minor procedures. Interviews patients and records medical history to establish data for treatment plan. Identifies education need to assure delivery of patient care for oneself and others in the department. Oversight and management of clinical staff. Assists with other clinic functions as required.
1. Performs physical assessments of patients, including triage duties and advises on treatment or course of action by having knowledge of nursing care standards and principles. 2. Develops, implements, and manages nursing care plans in collaboration with physicians. 3. Interviews patients and records medical history to establish data for treatment plan. 4. Plans and coordinates the admission and discharge of all patients. 5. Instructs patients and families in proper treatment and advises patients on health maintenance and disease prevention. 6. Performs patient care procedures by following appropriate policy and procedure. 7. Records patients’ medical histories and symptoms, operates medical machinery, administers treatment and medications, and coordinates patient follow-up and rehabilitation; assures all procedures for maintaining patient confidentiality are maintained per HIPAA guidelines. 8. Identifies education needed to assure competent delivery of patient care for oneself and others in the department. 9. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Graduation from accredited school of nursing.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Proven ability with clinical triage.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Demonstrated IV/Phlebotomy skills.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Strong ability to prioritize and organize in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
BS in Nursing and one year experience working in an ambulatory care setting. Ophthalmology clinic experience a plus.
Required Licenses or Certifications
Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut or Connecticut license eligible. Current CPR certification.
