Digital Resources Librarian
The Digital Collections Librarian reports to the Associate University Librarian for Collection Development, Humanities and Social Sciences and works closely with the Associate University Librarian for Sciences and Engineering.
The Digital Collections Librarian, in close collaboration with the AULs and SUL Acquisitions Librarians, manages the Libraries’ relationships with publishers and vendors of digital resources. In addition to the licensing process and pricing matters listed above, the Librarian coordinates publisher and vendor negotiations, evaluation of e-resources, and other related matters in conjunction with subject and technical specialists in all disciplines. The Digital Collections Librarian works closely with Acquisitions staff on ordering, renewals, and licensing implications, utilization of the ERM database, access issues, entitlements, usage statistics, and other related matters.
The Digital Collections Librarian manages the INFOACC fund, which is one of the major allocations in SUL’s Library Information Budget; the INFOACC fund as of Fiscal Year 2019 is approximately $1.275 million per year. This fund pays (in whole or in part) for various interdisciplinary e-resources and it is also frequently used to help form coalitions with various subject or endowed funds to make major e-resource subscriptions and purchases feasible. The Digital Collections Librarian also collaborates with the AULs for Collections in decisions for purchases made from the two EBOOKS funds (one for Social Sciences and Humanities, the other for Sciences and Engineering), and may manage other interdisciplinary and general purpose funds (LIS, GENSER, etc.).
The Digital Collections Librarian represents the Libraries with associations (such as NERL) which negotiate terms for big deals and other multi-party agreements and on external committees (such as IPLC) involving collections initiatives. The Librarian also serves, as needed and as appropriate, on SUL committees or other groups addressing Stanford’s e-resource needs, planning, and evaluation and is the liaison for e-resource matters to the relevant counterparts in Stanford’s Coordinate Libraries (Crown Law, Lane Medical, and Graduate School of Business).
Education & Experience:
- An MLIS or Advanced Degree in a related field and at least five years of transactional experience with academic publishers, resource aggregators, and other service providers.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Substantial knowledge of and experience with digital and online resources.
- Substantial knowledge of the academic publishing eco-system.
- Substantial knowledge of the terms governing digital resource licenses.
- Substantial knowledge of license terms governing text-mining and other non-consumptive uses of digital resources.
- Demonstrated initiative in fostering new ideas and implementing change.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Excellent organizational skills, proven problem solving ability, and flexibility;
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
- Frequently sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
- Occasionally stand/walk, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.
- Rarely writing by hand, use a telephone.
