DOCTORAL STUDENT AND POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER, INSTITUTE OF SEISMOLOGY

The University of Helsinki, founded in 1640, is one of the world’s leading universities for multidisciplinary research. The Faculty of Science situated at the Kumpula Campus is the largest hub of scientific expertise in the Nordic countries. The university has an international academic community of 40,000 students and staff members. The University of Helsinki offers comprehensive services to its employees, including occupational health care and health insurance, sports facilities, and opportunities for professional development. The International Staff Services office assists employees from abroad with their transition to work and life in Finland.

The Institute of Seismology in the Department of Geosciences and Geography at the University of Helsinki, Faculty of Science invites applications for two positions:

A DOCTORAL STUDENT AND A POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER

As part of a research project funded by the Academy of Finland, the successful candidates are expected to work on a seismic surface wave imaging technique in the context of large-N or dense seismic array data. The project involves collaboration with researchers in France (Grenoble, Lyon, Paris) and Germany (Munich). The aim is to study the resolution limits of refocusing surface wavefields using theoretical work and numerical wave propagation tools, and to apply the newly developed techniques to seismological (AlpArray, USArray) and industrial (mining) data sets.

We invite applications from candidates with a background in seismology, physics, acoustics, computer science or other related fields who are skilled in data analysis, programming, and scientific computing. We expect the successful candidates to use the large-scale computing infrastructure of the Finnish IT Center for Science (https://www.csc.fi/). The positions offer the opportunity to engage with the Helsinki Centre for Data Science and the Inverse Problem Group of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

The appointment for the PhD student will be for three years and the postdoc for two with the possibility of extension. The deadline for applications is August 31, 2019 but the evaluation will continue until suitable candidates are selected.

The starting salary of the doctoral student will be ca. 2200–2300 euros/month, and of the postdoc researcher ca. 3000-3300 euros/month depending on the appointees’ qualifications and experience. Furthermore, the University of Helsinki offers comprehensive services to its employees, including occupational health care and health insurance, sports facilities, and opportunities for professional development. The International Staff Services office assists employees from abroad with their transition to work and life in Finland (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/university/working-at-the-university). A six-month trial period will be applied.

To apply, please submit a single-file pdf document including your CV, list of publications and the names and contact information of at least two referees. Please submit your application using the University of Helsinki Recruitment System via the Apply link. Applicants who are employees of the University of Helsinki are requested to leave their application via the SAP HR portal. The application deadline is 31 August 2019.
