Applications are invited for a 3-year Research Fellowship as a PhD Candidate (SKO 1017) in innovation studies. The position will be based at the TIK Centre for Technology, Innovation and Culture (UiO).

The PhD project is part of the research centre INTRANSIT – “Centre for the Study of Innovation Policy for Industrial Transformation, Sustainability and Digitalization”. INTRANSIT is an interdisciplinary research centre hosted by the University of Oslo, with Sintef Digital, and Utrecht University as research partners. More about the position

The announced PhD position is connected to a study of transition pressures and pathways in Norwegian industries (connected to research stream 1 and 2 in INTRANSIT).

The PhD project will focus on mapping and analysing transformation pressures and pathways in one or several Norwegian industries. The goal is to develop new knowledge on the preconditions, drivers and barriers for transformation towards a smarter and more sustainable Norwegian economy. The PhD candidate is expected to actively contribute to the INTRANSIT research group, and can also draw on resources and plan research visits in INTRANSIT’s partner institutions.

In addition to his/her own research, candidates for three-year positions may be required to participate in teaching and/or administrative activities connected to TIK and/or INTRANSIT. It is also expected that candidates contribute actively to the dissemination of project findings and interactions with non-academic stakeholders. These activities will be compensated with an extension of the fellowship. For this position, extra work may extend the PhD period with a maximum of twelve months.

The candidate will be part of TIK’s PhD programme track and the wider programme at the Faculty of Social Science at the University of Oslo, but can take relevant approved PhD courses anywhere. The candidate is expected to complete the PhD project within the set fellowship period.  Research training and the successful completion of a PhD degree are the main goals of a fellowship. Requirements

Applicants must hold a two years Master’s degree or equivalent and meet the formal requirements to be enrolled in the PhD programme.

In addition, the Ph.D. candidate must have:

• A background in the field of innovation studies, sustainability transition studies, management, economics, or other relevant social science discipline
• Demonstrated research capabilities and experience is an advantage
• Knowledge of and experience with large datasets, database development and mixed-methods is an advantage
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English is necessary
• Knowledge of a Scandinavian language is an advantage but is not a requirement
• An interest in the field of sustainability transitions and industrial dynamics is an advantage.

Evaluation of the applicants

When evaluating the application, emphasis will be given to the candidate’s potential to perform high quality academic research, the match between the candidate’s research interest (as indicated in the cover letter) and the wider research approach in INTRANSIT, as well as the applicant’s academic and personal prerequisites to carry out the project. Candidates that have not familiarized themselves with the INTRANSIT research program and the research streams that this position will be part of, will not be considered as a relevant applicant.

Short-listed applicants will be invited to an interview. Relevant applicants might be asked to write a project proposal elaborating on a specific research task to be undertaken during the fellowship period.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.
