The University of Amsterdam’s Law School prides itself on its international orientation and strong social commitment. This is reflected by both its research and educational activities. The Amsterdam Law School offers three Bachelor’s programmes and a variety of Master's, some of which are taught exclusively in English (i.e. International and European Law, European Private Law, International Criminal Law, and Law & Finance). The Amsterdam Law School prepares students for a wide variety of legal careers including law firms, government, business and industry, the national and international judiciary, public service, human rights advocacy, and academia. With 3,700 students and over 400 staff members, it is one of the largest law faculties in the Netherlands. The Amsterdam Law School is located in the centre of Amsterdam.

The Centre for the Study of European Contract Law (CSEC) is an internationally oriented research centre in the field of European private law. Its research group consists of around 20 researchers. In the advertised position, you will provide management assistance to the academic director of CSECL and help develop and autonomously implement an effective strategy for the communication of research outcomes and events to academic peers and the general public.

Job description

The management and communication assistance comprises tasks such as the organization of academic events, updating and improving the website, creating periodical newsletter, increasing CSECL presence on the social media, interviewing academics for the website, writing annual reports, recording research output, keeping the financial overview of the research center up-to-date, organizing research stays at the CSECL, preparing and following up on management meetings and decisions.

We are looking for somebody who is capable of creating and maintaining a realistic balance between diverging and changing priorities, and capable of working under pressure while conducting a variety of activities.

Requirements

The candidate:

  • is capable of thinking and operating as a professional (level: higher education);
  • is able to communicate in English as well as in Dutch;
  • has had three years of experience and a good working knowledge of MS Office and Excel;
  • (preferably) has experience in creating annual reports;
  • (preferably) has experience with the publication software program Pure;
  • has a talent for organisational matters;
  • is accurate, flexible and capable of dealing with stress and peak loads;
  • has good communicative skills;
  • is proactive and service oriented;
  • is capable of functioning independently and within a team;
  • has a strong affinity with academic research (not necessarily in Law).

Appointment

The appointment will be for 1 year; subject to a positive evaluation a permanent position will follow. The salary will be in accordance with the salary scale for Secretary 1/2 at Dutch universities, i.e. salary scale 7/8 (depending on experience/education), ranging from €2,261 to €3,445 gross per month, based on 38 hours per week. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
