Position Focus:

Works under the direction of the Director of Biostatistics for the Veterans Aging Cohort Study (VACS) and affiliated cohorts to prepare data sets and perform initial statistical analysis in support of outcomes research projects.

Duties are as follows:

  • Prepare production data sets for general use. Large, raw data files, primarily from electronic health record extracts stored in SQL server databases, need to be cleaned, checked for quality and optimized for speed and file storage size.
  • Prepare analytic datasets, for specific projects according to specifications prepared by clinical and statistical leads. This involves merging multiple files, creating and applying inclusion and exclusion criteria and creating new variables.
  • Perform initial statistical analysis including summary of sample (i.e. Table 1), bivariate associations and basic modeling (i.e. linear or logistic regression).
  • Prepares documentation and user manuals.
  • Participates in the preparation of written and oral presentations that summarize the analysis of data, interprets the finding and provides conclusions and recommendations.

Essential Duties

1. Contributes in the development of programs or systems of small to moderate size and complexity. 2. Provides informational input into decisions concerning the development and delivery of applications, programs, and systems. Clarifies requirements to meet the expectations of stakeholders and intended end users needs, scheduled timeline, and budgetary targets. 3. Contributes to the collaborative effort of the analysis and design of new systems and applications. Performs various coding, debugging and unit testing tasks in support of applications, programs, and systems. 4. Contributes to the project definition, and the gathering of the functional requirements. 5. Troubleshoots problems whether due to data or software and rapidly resolves any problems that do occur. Provides ongoing maintenance and support for applications and systems. 6. Prepares documentation and user manuals. Provides support for training of end users. 7. Applies and keeps current with existing and emerging technologies and methodologies. Provides ongoing input to the establishment of programming standards, procedures, and methodologies. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree. One year programming experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Proficiency in SAS programming and basic analysis.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to prioritize work on multiple projects with competing deadlines.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to work in a collaborative environment with team members and clinical investigators.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Bachelor's Degree in computer science, statistics or biostatistics, or applied mathematics and one year programming experience for analytic applications, or an equivalent combination. Preferred prior analysis work in epidemiology, public health or health policy; knowledge of SQL server databases and programming; experience with other statistical software such as R or STATA.
