Position Focus:

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Operations for Yale School of Medicine (YSM) Communications, we are searching for a staff photographer with previous experience and expert knowledge to photograph YSM events, take stock medical and location photography, faculty and staff headshots, and provide some departmental photography needs for YSM. YSM is one of the country’s leading centers for biomedical research, advanced clinical care, and medical education.

The photographer will use previous experience and expert knowledge to create high quality photographic content for daily distribution over YSM websites, multiple social media channels, print publications, newsletters and syndication partners. The photographer will have expertise with photography and photographic equipment, as well as with metadata and digital archiving systems.

The ideal candidate will have experience taking business headshots, event photography, and group photography in a demanding environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide photographic coverage for YSM events, departmental photographic needs, and stock medical and location photography for publication.
• View subjects and settings and plan compositions, camera positions, and camera angles to produce desired effects.
• Evaluate the technical requirements of complex projects. Determine the most appropriate techniques and methods as well as time needed to complete assignments or projects. Assignments may require innovation to resolve problems that are not necessarily governed by established procedures.
• Select and assemble equipment according to subject material, anticipated conditions, and knowledge of function of various types of cameras, lenses, films, and accessories.
• Provide post-production file editing as needed, such as color management and minor photoshop adjustments.
• Maintain and monitor condition of equipment and software used to capture, edit and view images.
• Capture names, titles of people photographed, and other relevant information about events and situations being photographed.
• As part of a team, catalogue images in digital asset management system, using keywords, names, and other metadata.
• Help support a team of content creators, in collaboration with other team members, keep the central Yale School of Medicine online events calendar, social media accounts, and website home page updated with current events and news.
• Independently handle any difficulties or issues that happen during shoots, making sure to accomplish content needs while smoothing over difficulties and establishing/building positive relationships with all faculty and staff for future interactions.
• Contact and secure permission to shoot on location from proper owners/authorities, accurately describing shoot needs and on-site personnel.
• Independently responsible for adhering to all policies and procedures for HIPAA, FERPA, OSHA, and Yale University photography policies.
• May perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties

Provides color management support; matches hues and tones of digital files to original objects. 5. Maintains and monitors condition of equipment and software used to capture, edit and view images. 6. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and two years of related work experience in the same job family; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated ability as a photographer for digital publication.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated ability in taking business headshots, event photography and group photography. Exceptional interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated ability with frequently changing schedules while maintaining professionalism and attention to quality and detail.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Desire to work collaboratively, in an open, friendly manner. Ability to be organized and resourceful.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to be willing and work occasional off-hours on nights and weekends as events dictate.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

At least two years experience with photography equipment and metadata management. Experience with content management systems and academia. Experience in juggling daily deadlines with long-term projects; must be able to prioritize assignments. Ability to spend significant time in New Haven, CT.
