Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to join sigma, Coventry University's award winning mathematics and statistics support service, the leading provider of such support in UK higher education. sigma currently employs a team of seven staff who, along with additional help from other staff and student proctors, provide assistance in mathematics and statistics to students and staff from all faculties, which is in addition to the regular teaching they receive as part of their course. sigma's Drop-In Centre in the University Library is typically open for 50 hours a week during semester-time and receives around 17,000 student visits a year. A brand new larger Drop-In Centre is scheduled to be opened in September 2019 as part of a significant upgrade of the University Library facilities.

The post holder will be an integral member of sigma's Statistics Advisory Service (SAS) headed by Dr Alun Owen. As well as contributing to drop-in statistics support sessions, more in-depth support will be provided via one to one appointments with students and staff undertaking project work. In addition, the post holder will contribute to the continued development of a suite of statistics workshops run by the SAS team for postgraduate research students. The post holder will also have opportunities to design and develop statistics resources and to explore innovative ways of providing statistics support. We are particularly interested in candidates who have expertise in innovative use of technology to support learning. Although sitting outside the University's Faculty structure, sigma has reciprocal links with the School of Computing, Electronics and Mathematics, which means there may be opportunities for the post holder to contribute to undergraduate teaching on degree courses in the mathematical sciences.

The post holder will be expected to engage in research, which may be in statistics, statistics support or statistics education more generally, or as the statistics expert collaborating with colleagues in other subject disciplines. sigma is committed to the scholarship of teaching and learning and is internationally recognised for its scholarly approach to mathematics and statistics support; work in this area is led by Professor Duncan Lawson, recently awarded an MBE for services to mathematics in higher education, and Dr Alun Owen who co-leads the sigma-Network's Special Interest Group (SIG) in Statistics Support. Our staff regularly publish and present at conferences and deliver professional development workshops.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in statistics or a related subject, along with a background knowledge and interests covering abroad range of subjects which will allow them to provide statistics support ina number of subject areas across the University. Familiarity with statistics software is also required (Coventry University mainly uses SPSS and R). Whilst experience of providing statistics support is desirable, far more important is that applicants have a genuine vocation for helping others to learn, an ability to communicate well across a wide range of degree levels and student abilities, and a willingness to work as part of a team.

While the appointment is expected to be full time, we will be happy to consider applications from individuals who would prefer a fractional contract, typically 0.5 full time equivalent.
