Our department

The University of Otago is one of New Zealand's largest and most research-intensive universities. With its establishment in 1871, the Department of Chemistry at Otago is the oldest chemistry department in New Zealand. We currently teach ca 500 effective full-time students and have a separate administrative unit within the Division of Sciences. There are currently 15 full-time academic staff, 20 full-time administrative and technical staff and 12 full-time research staff including postdoctoral fellows. In addition, embedded within the Department are the Plant Extracts Research Unit, and the Centre for Chemical and Physical Oceanography.

The Department has a rich research culture with a strong focus on research excellence and a good record in attracting external research funding.

The role

We are seeking to appoint a full-time, permanent (confirmation path) Lecturer in Synthetic Chemistry. In this role you will contribute to the Department's excellent teaching and learning culture and to our national and international research profile.

You will be expected to:

  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the area(s) of biological/medicinal chemistry and/or organic chemistry, and to general chemistry at the first year undergraduate level.
  • Contribute to the research activities of the Department, including publishing in high-quality peer-reviewed journals, seek external funding support and supervise research students.
  • Develop collaborations with colleagues across the University, nationally and internationally.
  • Contribute to the effective and efficient running of the Department and its responsibilities within the University and wider community.

Your skills and experience

  • Hold a PhD in chemistry (biological/medicinal chemistry and/or molecular materials synthesis).
  • Have relevant research experience and a corresponding publication record.
  • Be an enthusiastic teacher of chemistry.
  • Be committed to developing collaborative working relationships with colleagues and to supporting the University's Māori, Pacific, and sustainability strategic frameworks.
