The ‘Certification for Design - Reshaping the Testing Pyramid’ (CerTest) project is a £6.9M research investment by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in the form of a Programme Grant. CerTest is conducted in a close partnership between the academic partners; University of Bristol (lead), University of Bath, University of Exeter and the University of Southampton, with strong industrial and stakeholder support from Airbus, Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, GKN Aerospace, CFMS, the National Composites Centre (NNC), the Alan Turing Institute, and also with close interaction with the European Aviation Safety Agency. CerTest addresses barriers to validation and certification of composite aerostructures posed by the so-called ‘building block approach’ (or ‘testing pyramid’), which is the backbone of current validation and certification processes. CerTest represents a decisive step towards ‘virtual testing’ on the structural scale, and aims to reduce development cost and time to market, as well as to enable more structurally efficient and lightweight composite aerostructures, that are essential for meeting future fuel and cost efficiency challenges.

The core research challenges in CerTest are strongly multidisciplinary, and these will be addressed by a interdisplinary team of researchers at the academic partner institutions. There is close collaboration between these institutions, led by the academic team and postdoctoral fellows, supported by PhD and EngD studentships carried out in close collaborations with the industrial partners. As part of the CerTest project, based at the Bristol Composites Institute (ACCIS), there is an exciting opportunity to join the team, developing state of the art numerical methods to aid the design of composite aircraft and aero engine components. Such components require complex geometries and fibre architectures both for aerodynamics and structural integration. In service they are likely to see a variety of challenging loading and environmental conditions, which risk causing material and structural failure.

This post will develop new multi-scale numerical tools for the prediction of failure of composite materials and structures, based on a sound physical understanding of the underlying damage mechanisms. The work will run in close collaboration with researchers conducting experimental testing, which will provide essential information for model generation and validation. High quality numerical analysis is a crucial part of the process of understanding the failure process in composite materials and structures.

Based in the Bristol Composites Institute (ACCIS), within the Department of Aerospace Engineering, you will work on development of custom written codes to build complex models, application of commercial finite element software and development of user subroutines, reporting on results internally and to the industrial partners.

You will have a PhD in Engineering / Materials Science/ Applied Mathematics (or closely related discipline) and good experience of finite element analysis techniques, programming and composites failure mechanisms.
