The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences is one of three Schools in the Faculty of Science; encompassing the Disciplines of Mathematics, Physics and Statistics. The School’s academics comprise many of the leading researchers within the University of Newcastle and the School hosts several of the leading University Priority Research Centres; identifying and supporting key concentrations of research strength.

Space Physics is an area of strength at the University of Newcastle, where the School’s four-digit code ‘Astronomical and Space Sciences’ was ranked 5 (well above world standard) in the latest Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessment. Currently, this area is experiencing a generation change with highly regarded A/Prof David Pontin at the head of this field.

About your NEW role

Lecturer in computational or experimental Space Physics to work within the Discipline of Physics. The successful candidate will contribute to a dynamic, transdisciplinary and globally competitive research environment through research collaboration, securing external grant income, delivering high quality publication outcomes and attracting higher degree research students. The successful candidate will contribute to a lively, passionate and internationally recognised teaching environment through curriculum development, innovative course delivery and excellent student engagement.

About you 

  • A PhD in Physics or equivalent relevant field.
  • Demonstrated recent experience in an academic role delivering results in research and innovation, teaching and learning, and service and engagement.
  • Strong research track record (relative to opportunity) in an area relevant to Space Physics.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead/undertake collaborative research (academic and industry).
  • Demonstrated ability to attract external research funding.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering courses in Physics (including first year courses) in a variety of teaching modes.

The remuneration is from $97,268 + 17% super and is commensurate with experience.
