Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato The University of Waikato and Te Kura Toi Tangata School of Education has always had a strong affinity with Māori. Many of our graduates are now influential leaders in Māori education working in wānanga, universities, schools and government departments.

Te Kura Toi Tangata School of Education is seeking to appoint a continuing full-time Associate Professor or Professor in Māori Medium. On appointment, the successful candidate will also be the Associate Dean Māori for an initial period of five years.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate academic leadership and a sustained record of scholarly achievement nationally and internationally as well as an active research agenda and the ability to lead in academic research across the Division and University. A PhD is required and a recognised teaching qualification preferred. The University is committed to Māori and Pacific learner success. Proficiency in te reo Māori and knowledge and understanding of tikanga and Mātauranga Māori are essential and an understanding of development as it applies to Pasifika communities would be advantageous.

Predominately based in Hamilton, the appointee will teach in a number of courses in the School’s programmes, in their field(s) of expertise and contribute to Māori medium teaching, including at least one curriculum learning area: Pāngarau, Te Reo, Tikanga-ā-iwi, Hangarau, Pūtaiao, Ngā Toi, or Hangarau Matahiko. Applicants should indicate their particular areas of curriculum, professional practice and research strengths. Demonstrated ability to provide a major contribution to the graduate and postgraduate programme including the supervision of Honours, Masters, Te Tohu Paerua and PhD students is also essential.

Current salary range for Associate Professors is NZ$124,726 to $137,718 per year and Professors is $140,316 and above per year, dependent on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant.
