Executive Director, Clinical and Translational Research
Stanford University is seeking an Executive Director to provide strategic leadership and direction for clinical and translational research operations in the School of Medicine’s Research Office. Leveraging combined strengths in fundamental discovery and translational research, access to a growing and world-class health system, and expertise in innovation and entrepreneurship, the Research Office is leading the charge to enhance and strengthen our research enterprise with the goal of improving human health locally and globally.
Through funding from the NIH Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program, Stanford is actively engaged in a network of more than 50 medical research institutions across the nation working together to improve the translational research landscape. The Executive Director plays a lead role in overseeing Stanford’s CTSA funded activities including training the translational science workforce, engaging patients and diverse communities in translational research, advancing the use of cutting-edge informatics and improving research processes.
Key Duties include:
- Hire and manage staff leads for the Research Office’s clinical and translational research (CTR) functions including clinical research services, regulatory knowledge and research quality, business/IT systems, education/workforce development, and research participant recruitment. The executive director oversees day to day research operations funded by Stanford’s Clinical and Translations Science Award (CTSA), and provides oversight and leadership for the team, inspiring staff to collaborate and collectively meet the overall CTR goals of the Research Office.
- Partner with the Senior Associate Dean for Research, Associate Deans and staff program leads to develop and implement the overall vision and strategic direction for clinical and translational research support services. Launch and evolve major programs and initiatives to further clinical and translational research goals.
- Oversee the development of a comprehensive strategic plan with annual plans and key performance indicators to ensure timely implementation of the CTSA grant.
- Create dashboards for measuring and communicating impact and disseminating best practices. Ensure appropriate reporting of CTSA common metrics.
- Develop long-range funding plan for CTR activities and establish the annual financial parameters available for programmatic work, in partnership with Senior Associate Dean for Research and Director of Finance and Administration.
- Serve as primary spokesperson for Stanford’s CTSA funded activities with internal and external audiences including NIH, NCATS and entire CTSA consortium.
- Establish new collaborations across the CTSA consortium including participation on various workgroups. Identify opportunities to leverage Stanford’s clinical and translational research for broader impact.
- Strengthen existing relationships and cultivate new partnerships to help further Stanford’s CTR mission. Oversee recruitment for CTSA Program related advisory boards, managing all meetings and related events.
- Play lead role in writing CTSA grant proposals and developing annual reports. Facilitate development of grant proposals for CTSA supplemental support as well as from other funding sources.

10+ years of progressively responsible experience in clinical and translational research operations, project management, administrative or operational role in an academic health center or clinical/translational research setting. Minimum eight years of senior leadership of complex work teams.
Extensive expertise developing large grant proposals and managing contracts including the development of evaluation programs with impact metrics. Proven ability to work collaboratively across a decentralized organization, including working with academics and researchers. Demonstrated experience cultivating new partnerships and developing collaborations with internal and external stakeholders.
Advanced degree in a relevant field.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor’s degree and seven years of relevant experience in administrative and financial management, or combination of education and relevant experience.
