Founded when the university opened in 1891, the historic museum was expanded and renamed in 1999 for lead donors Iris and B. Gerald Cantor. The Cantor’s collection spans 5,000 years and includes more than 38,000 works of art from around the globe. These include our renowned collection of Rodin bronze sculptures, which are displayed inside the museum as well as in our outdoor Rodin Sculpture Garden. With 24 galleries and more than 15 special exhibitions each year, the Cantor is an established resource for teaching and research on campus. Free admission, tours, lectures, and family activities make the Cantor one of the most visited university art museums in the country.

We are seeking a dedicated Security Lead responsible for the overall safety of visitors, staff, and museum assets at our museum on campus. We are looking for a collaborative, energetic, hard-working, and focused individual who will not only take initiative in acting as the point of contact for coordinating security personal placements, but also conduct training involving emergency procedures and museum events. The Security Lead will provide positive visitor relations and customer service. This position will report to the security manager and management team to ensure the safety and security of visitors, staff and museums assets for the Cantor Arts Center.

JOB PURPOSE

Responsible for the security of the building. Responsible for the security of the building. Responds to safety of visitors/ staff, safety of museum objects, monitor galleries for theft and vandalism.

CORE DUTIES

  • Assigns placement of security personnel based on daily operations or special events, and schedules breaks • Opens /closes the building as assigned
  • Conducts emergency response training, briefings on museum environment and events
  • Patrols building and associated museum grounds on a regular basis
  • Reports and documents suspicious and/or illegal behavior, safety hazards, unsecured doors
  • Assists and provides directions to University faculty, students, staff, volunteers andvisitors
  • Monitors and utilizes electronic security systems, including access control, video monitoring, two-way radio
  • communications, and RFID technology
  • Inspect ID’s of staff, temps, docents and interns at staff entrance; sign-in and clear visitors and contractors • Responds to emergencies and works with campus security and other emergency agencies as needed
  • Assigns and explains tasks to workers based on instructions specifications received from supervisor • Inspects work for conformance with specifications
  • Trains employees to meet quality and quantity standards
  • Advises supervisor of work progress.
  • Promotes adherence to safety rules
  • Other duties as assigned 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education & Experience

  • Six months of security supervision experience
  • Museum/galleries experience strongly preferred 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Exceptional customer service skills; ability to interact well with the public and maintain a positive, professional attitude even under trying circumstances.
  • Effective oral/written communication skills including the ability to interact with a diverse group of people.
  • Ability to respond and act calmly in a high-pressure emergency situation.
  • Ability to learn and apply security technology, including access control systems, video management systems and other computerized security surveillance and fire detection systems.
  • Ability to learn and apply a variety of University and departmental policies.
  • Ability to keep sensitive information strictly confidential.
  • Ability to use and/or learn to use two-way radio for communication.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team. 

Certifications and Licenses

  • CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Ability to obtain Security Guard License
  • Valid California non-commercial driver's license (strongly preferred)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, operate foot and/or hand controls.
  • Occasionally use a telephone/radio, write by hand.
  • Kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), reach/work above shoulders, grasp forcefully, use a telephone, sort/ file paperwork or parts, scrub/sweep/mop, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh <40 pounds to a height of 18-24 inches repeatedly.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Shift work (days, evenings, weekend, holidays).
  • Must wear personal protective equipment as defined/required by job assignments.

  • May work mandatory overtime.
