Stanford Bits & Watts Initiative facilitates interactions between companies and other organizations, and Stanford’s faculty and graduate students, working on system level issues related to the electric power transformation.  This position has responsibility for managing and executing many activities in support of the Bits & Watts’ goals.  The goals of the Bits & Watts Initiative include developing meaningful new research directions, managing and retaining current members, recruiting new members, coordinating and supporting faculty-company interactions, performing administrative functions, and supporting a comprehensive energy community at Stanford.

In achieving these goals, the Program Manager will manage and execute programs and tasks such as supporting member companies and faculty; planning events and activities ranging from large conferences to small meetings; supporting the administration of seed research awards; managing the Bits & Watts budget and processing financial transactions; invoicing members and tracking payments; maintaining the company and people database; maintaining and updating the website, helping to manage the Bits & Watts graduate fellowships and Executive Education offering; providing support for international and US visiting scientists; and assuring that members receive invitations to all appropriate Stanford events. This position reports to the Managing Director for the Bits & Watts Initiative at Stanford University.

  • Assist with Bits & Watts postdoc fellowships including working with the selection committee and the nominees (3 fellowship winners per year)
  • Bits & Watts Annual Conference
  • Delivery of Bits & Watts Annual Conference
  • Bits & Watts Affiliate-funded Research
  • Support award management for affiliate-funded research projects

JOB PURPOSE:

Administer and support programs or functions under general supervision.

CORE DUTIES*:

  • Independently implement, administer and evaluate day-to-day activities of the unit, function or program. Act as key contact.
  • Collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program or function.
  • Analyze and interpret policies; develop, revise and implement procedures for program or function.
  • Represent the program or function within the department, unit or school. May also represent the program or function to external constituencies. 
  • Organize and/or participate in outreach activities that may include communications, events, training, and/or conferences. May participate in development of budgets or oversee budgets and monitor and approve expenditures.
  • May direct staff to perform various tasks and assignments. May also supervise staff.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize own work and multi-task.
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and ownership of projects.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 
  • Ability to routinely and independently exercise sound judgment in making decisions.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team.
  • Relevant subject matter knowledge.
  • Ability to direct the work of others, for jobs requiring supervision.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks. 
  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally use a telephone.
  • Rarely lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.
