Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Artificial Intelligence
Department: Computer Science
Starting from £40,792, rising to £48,677
Grade 8
Ref: CC6661R

We are looking for an academic with expertise in artificial intelligence to lead research, teach, and help with the running of the Department. We’re  particularly looking for someone with research interests in a core area of AI such as machine learning, reinforcement learning, natural language processing or AI for robotics. You will be part of the Artificial Intelligence group, within the Department of Computer Science. Your research interest might also engage with the other groups in the Department: Human-Computer Interaction, Visual Computing and Mathematical Foundations.
  About the Artificial Intelligence group

The AI group at the University of Bath has grown quickly in the last five years, and so has our reputation. Our team includes internationally renowned experts, such as Dr Joanna Bryson, who has recently been named as one of the top 10 AI influencers, and Dr Neill Campbell, a Royal Society Industry Fellow. Our team also includes lots of early career researchers, so there are many opportunities to progress.
We are a highly collaborative team, working not only with the other research groups in our Department, but across the university and beyond. For instance, the university has recently launched the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Accountable, Responsible and Transparent AI. The centre brings together science, engineering, humanities and social sciences to work on and research AI. As well as supervising PhD students from this centre, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with the Centre’s growing set of partners. These include Google AI, DeepMind, the FCA, ONS, NHS, and universities including São Paulo, Zhejiang and Tsinghua.
What you will do as a lecturer

Research – You will work with colleagues, students and researchers to develop and publish papers. You’ll apply to bring in research grant funding. You will also find ways of opening up your research to the public, for example, by delivering talks or holding demonstration days.
Teaching – You will have a few courses to run. This includes designing the content and delivering the course through lectures, tutorials, and technical labs. You’ll be educating and inspiring some of the brightest students in the country.
Helping with the running of the Department – You’ll have a few internal roles to help the Department run smoothly. You might help with student placements, contribute to the administration around admissions, or lead a team of researchers.
The support and growth opportunities we will give you

Training for an HEA fellowship qualification – We will enrol you into the Bath Course, which will give you the skills and support you need for the teaching aspect of the role. The course lasts three years, after which you will become a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Mentoring – For the first three years of the role, you will have a mentor. They will support you in your day-to-day job, and help you progress.

Opportunities to progress, manage and lead – We’re a growing team and there are lots of opportunities to grow with us.

Opportunities to collaborate and build on our networks – As well as the partners we mentioned above, we have developed strong networks across sectors such as entertainment, sport, healthcare and technologies. You will be able to work with and build on these networks to help with your research and to attract more funding.

Other things we can offer you
We offer flexible working, with specific processes and policies in place.
