The Division Adventure Programs in Recreation and Wellness is hiring for an Assistant Director of Adventure Sports. The ideal candidate enjoys working directly with students, faculty and staff to create a vibrant student life focused community, and is confident in explaining and upholding policy, implementing and improving current practices, and tracking the many details related to running a facility and its programming. We seek someone with outstanding communication skills, a talent for influence and negotiation, acute problem-solving skills, diplomatic savvy, a good sense of humor and a sharp mind.
Under the direction of the Director of Adventure Programs, the Assistant Director of Adventure Sports is responsible for the operation of the Kayaking facility and its programs, the Climbing Wall facilities and its programs, as well as the supervision of the Indoor Climbing Wall Coordinator.
Administer, implement, and interpret university and department policies and procedures regarding the operations of the Adventure sports unit which include but not limited to: indoor rock climbing, whitewater kayaking, and sea kayaking. Identify, clarify, and resolve issues with substantial significance and impact for the Adventure sport unit using advanced technical and professional knowledge requiring independent judgment.
Your responsibilities will include:
Management Responsibilities (50%)
- Collaborate with Adventure Programs and Recreation Division Staff to help resolve issues and concerns, interpret policies, and mediate complex and sensitive issues.
- Reconcile cross divisional issues; analyze diverse perspectives from varied user groups.
- Summarize qualitative and quantitative user data, prepare management reports and presentations.
- Identify and evaluate data needs, manage the implementation and development of data gathering strategies.
- Develop and implement plans for outreach efforts, develop and maintain internal community.
- Serve as a subject matter expert to other departments; represent unit at meetings and events.
- Lead, create and contribute to development of business practices and organizational change to improve processes and workflow.
- Oversee, analyze and assist in financial processes and development of budgets.
- Serve as a key member of department and division teams and projects.
- Supervision and performance coaching of the Climbing Walls Coordinator and Route Setting manager, responsibility for their delegated duties and staffing oversight.
- Work under the direction of the Adventure Program Director to develop annual program and operations plans.
Recreation Programming Responsibilities (25%)
- Provide guidance and counsel for the academic climbing and kayaking curricula
- Oversee and develop a wide range of recreational programs and services, analyze effectiveness and make recommendations for future programs.
- Responsible for the daily management of recreation climbing instructional programs and staff, including the staff recruitment, hiring, orientation, scheduling, motivation and retention of student and contingent personnel.
- Plan, organize, and facilitate training, work assignments, evaluations, and if needed, disciplinary action for recreation instructional personnel
- Collaborate with the Client Solutions Manager to execute marketing endeavors for educational climbing programs.
- Design, implement, and regularly evaluate curriculum and instructional materials for climbing instructors working in both the recreation and physical education programs.
- Run in-service trainings and workshops with evaluative opportunities for both the recreation and academic instructional staff.
- Instruct courses, workshops, and other recreation based programs as needed.
Academic Instructional Responsibilities (25%)
- Teach or assist in the teaching and administration of courses 10-12 units per year
- Write lecture material and handouts used in activity, seminar, and practicum courses
- Design, implement, and regularly evaluate curriculum used in activity, seminar and practicum courses
- Monitor expenses, budgets, and expenses of courses
- Lead or facilitate instructor development workshops
- Engage in critical analysis of student performance based on course outcomes
- Analyze feedback from students and peers to improve teaching methodology
- Change and adapt course material following current research and trends
- Administer field sections in accordance with University and Adventure Program standards
- Participate in Outdoor Education instructor meetings
- Work collaboratively with peers within the HHP academic program
To be successful in this position, you will bring:
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree preferred.
- Professional certifications and demonstrated experience in at least two of the technical skill areas (rock climbing, whitewater kayaking, sea kayaking, mountaineering, canyoneering, backpacking.)
- Member of professional organizations such as AMGA, ACA, AORE, PCIA or equivalents.
- Instructor Certifications in professional organizations such as AMGA, ACA, PCIA or equivalents.
- Wilderness First Responder and CPR certifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and management.
- Advanced analysis and problem-solving skills.
- Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Advanced customer service skills.
- Relevant computer systems/technology experience.
- Understanding of financial transactions.
- Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.
- Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
- Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
- May work extended hours, evenings or weekends.
- May travel.
- Travel on campus to schools/units.
