Location: Whitechapel
Closing date: 05-Aug-2019

Overview:

Applications are invited for a full-time Data Manager within the Centre for Genomics and Child Health, Blizard Institute, Bart’s and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London, and will have an honorary contract with the Department of Clinical Haematology, Royal London Hospital, Bart’s Health NHS.

The post is funded by a grant from the biotechnology company Bluebird bio Inc, which is developing gene therapy for sickle cell disease and thalassaemia. The aim of the project is to update clinical data on the East London Newborn Sickle Cell Cohort, and to produce a report on current clinical status and outcomes. The cohort includes all children identified with sickle cell disease by newborn screening in the London boroughs of Hackney and Tower Hamlets from 1983. The majority of the patients are under continuing follow-up in the children and adult sickle cell disease services at the Royal London Hospital, but about 30% have transferred their care to other NHS institutions, and a small percentage are currently lost to follow-up. Regulatory approval has been given to obtain clinical follow up on all cohort patients without the specific individual consent, in order to obtain comprehensive, unbiased assessment of current status of morbidity and mortality.

The project will involve working with the study PI (Dr Paul Telfer) and project manager (Cynthia Sangarappillai) in managing a Microsoft Access clinical database, accessing paper and electronic records at the Royal London Hospital and contacting clinicians and other health care workers in other NHS services to update and verifying data, production of datasheets for statistical analysis, and assisting with analysis and production of reports within a specified time line.

Suitable candidates will be provided with the appropriate training where necessary. A demonstrated ability to communicate well, work within a team and maintain confidentiality is essential.

The post is a full time, fixed term position for 1 year, dependent on adequate regular progress reports.  The starting date is September 1st 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter. Starting salary will be in the range (£31,054 - £33,615) per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and an interest free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Dr Paul Telfer (p.telfer@qmul.ac.uk) and Cynthia Sangarappillai (c.sangarappillai@qmul.ac.uk) or on +44 (0) 020 3246 0338.

Details about the institute can be found at www.blizard.qmul.ac.uk
