The expanded School of Social Sciences at Heriot-Watt University includes Edinburgh Business School, which delivers all of the University’s teaching and research in business and business-related subjects, across multiple modes of delivery.

About our Team

Edinburgh Business School is now seeking a Head of International to provide the academic and business development leadership for all its international activities; the successful candidate will operate across the wider School of Social Sciences and be part of the leadership team.

The University’s 2025 strategy has four themes all of which are incorporated into the role of the International function within the School of Social Sciences and Edinburgh Business School. Pioneering in research, pioneering in education, building a flourishing community and becoming a globally interconnected university. Candidates will need to demonstrate how they would be fulfilling those themes in the role.

Detailed Description

The Head of International is a senior, Professorial-level role that will be the face of Edinburgh Business School and Heriot-Watt University, internationally, for all its business and social science subjects. As well as demonstrating the highest standards of teaching and research, candidates will need to show that they have been responsible for sizeable revenue generation activity.

Working alongside the Directors of Learning and Teaching, this role will cover both students studying overseas with accredited learning partners, and those from overseas joining Heriot-Watt on one of its three campus locations, especially those from our articulation partners.

This role would suit a senior academic with a strong business background/acumen. It is externally facing (out with the University) and internally facing. It will implement the university’s international strategy and the School’s strategy and will sit on the EBS Council (and the leadership team of the School of Social Sciences). The role spans EBS and all of SoSS including the non-business school elements, i.e. the departments of Psychology, and of Languages and Intercultural Studies.

This role combines a strong business focus with the academic specialisms of the School. The role works in conjunction with the central university international team, and liaises with the Director of the Confucius Institute to drive existing and new strategic partnerships in China.

The role reports to the Executive Dean of Edinburgh Business School with strong ties to the Head of the School of Social Sciences and the Assistant Principal (International Development).

Key duties and responsibilities

To establish a dedicated international team in the School, with clearly defined roles, with a strong functional link to the office of the Assistant Principal (International Development), to oversee the academic and business side of all international academic partnerships including: Articulation, Learning Partners and Collaborative Partners for all programmes in the School of Social Sciences which incorporates the new Business School.

To assume responsibility for all aspects of international activity including partnership quality assurance, recruitment and promotion, aspects of student experience, partnership management and a strong focus on business development. To establish a unified structure to manage all partnerships with quality assurance, student experience, recruitment, promotion, and business development working well together.

To carefully review the combined portfolio which will come under the new structure to determine the potential and to track income/cost/contribution. This will inform the development of a business model and fee structure going forward.

To maximise the development of products such as pre-sessional English and other areas that may help to attract and support international students.

To establish internal resources and systems which inform the management of current partnership arrangements and enable the expansion of such in line with the School’s academic and business plans of all partnerships against set targets and income/cost/contribution, thereafter a ‘health check’ review, combined with annual monitoring on an annual basis.

To introduce a consistent fee pricing strategy, building on the work already carried out for current EBS partnerships as well as recruitment targets, informed by the university and School strategy.

To provide support to the Foundation courses run in Dubai and Malaysia as required to ensure articulation with international recruitment pathways and to offer input to the development of any future foundation-level provision

While the primary activity of the post holder will be the development and supervision of international activity, as a senior academic in the University they will also be expected to participate in the delivery of teaching and supervision for undergraduate and post graduate students, and to maintain their research and/or scholarship interests

Team management

The role oversees a team of four, including a deputy (an 0.5 academic role) and three other existing staff involved in the development and administration of international partnerships.

Education, qualifications and experience

Person specification

  • Proven leadership ability and people management, including the supervision and development of other academic staff
  • A passion for, and experience of leading, trans-national education in a business school context
  • Externally known and recognised for their work in the international context
  • Interpersonal skills – this role works closely with many other internal stakeholders including but not restricted to the University’s central Marketing & Recruitment team, the University’s central International team, the Confucius Institute, the in-country offices in China and India.
