About University

The newly-established Khalifa University of Science and Technology combines the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MI), Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR), and the Petroleum Institute (PI) into one world-class, research-intensive institution, seamlessly integrating research and education to produce world leaders and critical thinkers in applied science and engineering.

Brief Description

To provide high quality research support and undertake internationally competitive research aimed at publication thereby contributing to the academic and research mission of the University. Since the Postdoctoral, experience is transitional to becoming an independent researcher or faculty member, the Postdoctoral tries their best to acquire the varied skills necessary to advance their career with guidance from the advisor. These skills include, but are not limited to, the ability to present research plans and findings in a convincing style, both in oral and written modes of communication, the ability to understand research group management and supervision of others, the ability to establish contacts and network with colleagues pursuing a similar research agenda, the ability to organize and teach a class or a course if more inclined towards a teaching career.

Detailed Description

Actuator development and closed-loop control of 3-D turbulent wakes. The post-doctoral position will focus on experimental and numerical studies of various control strategies and actuators to be used for the control of the bi-stable wake dynamics of a generic terrestrial vehicle model (the so-called “Ahmed Body”). The goal is the stabilization of the Reflectional Symmetry Breaking (RSB) Mode, which dominates the wake global dynamics and is contributing to drag fluctuations and vehicle stability issues. A significant part of the work will address the design and testing of new ideas for actuators which could be effective in modifying the wake while preserving the basic shape of the bluff body. This work will be performed in the KU wind tunnel facility, but also in similar facilities at the University of Liverpool and IMSIA-ParisTech. In addition to the experimental facilities, a high-performance computer cluster is also available at KU for numerical (CFD) investigations. This is a full-time, research-oriented position. The candidate will be working with the KU support personnel and other post-doctoral researchers to organize the design and manufacturing of the test models, actuators and other elements of the experimental setup. Training of the candidate in various experimental methods (PIV, LDV, etc.) can also be provided. The candidate’s primary responsibilities will include setting up and conducting wind tunnel experiments and/or numerical simulations; analyzing and exploiting the results; writing and submitting publications to the top-rated scientific journals. Funding is available for two travels per year to relevant international scientific conferences. The candidate should also be prepared to spend at least 3 months every year in one of the partner institutions.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering/Fluid Mechanics, or in a related field. Doctoral students close to completing their Ph.D. are also encouraged to apply. The candidate should have demonstrated excellence and potential for academic research.

Required Experience

The candidate must exhibit solid skills in programming and data analysis (LabView, Matlab or Python). Previous experience and skills in wind tunnel testing, real-time embedded systems, flow control, turbulent flows, stability analysis, Reduced-Order Modelling, or CFD and parallel computing will be a significant advantage. The candidate must also be able to communicate efficiently in English, and comfortable in working within an international team comprised of faculty, post-doctoral researchers and graduate students.
