Job Details

Department
The University of York is restructuring the Enterprise Services division of its Research and Enterprise Directorate in order to increase its contribution to the impact of research from York's three academic Faculties (Science; Social Sciences; Arts & Humanities), and help deliver York's Knowledge Exchange Strategy which was launched early in 2019. A Commercialisation Team is being created to drive growth in company creation (especially spin-outs), commercial licensing, and specialist commercial services from our Faculties' world class research. This has created an opportunity to recruit a Head of Commercialisation - this new post will report to the Associate Director (Enterprise Services) and will be expected to provide a strategic lead for the University in the area of commercialisation.

Role
The Head of Commercialisation will be charged with providing leadership to a small team which, in addition to the types of commercialisation outcomes listed above, will be expected to (i) assist specific commercialisation opportunities by building teams and/or winning external grants specifically aimed at developing opportunities towards commercialisation outcomes; and (ii) support development of a small number of longer-term projects that improve York's infrastructure and culture for commercialisation.
Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

The role's responsibilities also include:

  • Driving growth in commercialisation income, and from externally-funded grants that advance opportunities towards commercial outcomes;
  • Developing a prioritisation framework for the Team to ensure effort is concentrated on opportunities with the highest chances of success;
  • Promoting the benefits of commercialisation to academic faculties and departments, to ensure that the pipeline of commercialisation opportunities becomes increasingly strong;
  • Providing strategic and operational leadership, coaching and mentoring to the small team of line reports.
  • Developing and maintaining high level relationships with external facilitators of the University’s commercialisation activities especially investors, selected companies and the staff of relevant public agencies;

The above list of duties is not exhaustive and is subject to change. The successful candidate may be required to undertake other duties within the scope and grading of the post.

There is a great opportunity at York for the successful candidate to enhance his/her career through this appointment, with a large pool of untapped potential across our world class research base. Successful candidates will be likely to have a demonstrated track record of sustained success in commercialising the results of research and/or specialist expertise of staff from a higher education, public sector research or industrial background in one or more jobs at a managerial/ executive level. Evidence of successful leadership of high performing teams, and a committed approach to developing long-term relationships of mutual benefit inside and outside the employing organisation will be required. The ideal candidate will also have a flexible and agile approach to his/her work, while the proved ability to influence key stakeholders and decision-makers in person and in writing will be essential.
