Newman University's mission is centred on the Catholic values of respect for others, social justice and equity.  Newman is driven to make a positive impact by widening access to higher education, fostering academic excellence, and building a diverse and thriving community. Our patron, John Henry Newman, was committed to dialogue, development of the whole person, and reflective learning; his vision is very much alive at Newman University.

The University is highly regarded for its student experience, teaching quality and graduate employability.  With 2,800 students, our portfolio covers a broad range of arts, humanities and social sciences across foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.  Founded in 1968, we gained University status in 2013 and are progressing towards Research Degree Awarding Powers.  We are student-centred in all that we do. Newman has an unusually high proportion of students first in their family to enter higher education, and we are near the top of the ‘value-added’ table, reflecting our contribution to long-term student success.  We recently revamped the campus to create beautiful new halls of residence and integrated teaching and learning spaces. Our community is welcoming and friendly; students and staff know one another’s faces and names. We have a long-standing and deep commitment to sustainability.

The new Vice-Chancellor will lead Newman’s pursuit of excellence in teaching, research and the student experience.  She or he will grow the University’s profile in the Birmingham region and abroad, and promote its interests across industry and government.  We seek an exceptional candidate to lead Newman University at a time of unprecedented change for the higher education sector.

The successful appointee will be an outgoing, influential and visible leader, who will earn the respect and support of staff, students, governors, partners, donors and other key stakeholders.  She or he will sustain a cohesive and inclusive community, inspiring commitment to the values, mission and vision of the University.  Candidates will be able to communicate a clear and distinctive view of the future for a small, Catholic University; turn vision into action, and develop and sustaining diverse and high performing teams.

The post carries a genuine occupational requirement that the Vice-Chancellor be a duly qualified Roman Catholic.

A briefing document can be found at: www.odgers.com/72059.

The closing date for applications is Friday 6th September 2019.

Newman University is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive community which encourages all students and employees to fulfil their potential and which values individuals because of their differences.  This is in keeping with Newman University's Catholic foundation and mission statement.
