The Neurochoice Initiative in the Department of Psychology at  Stanford University ( is seeking a full-time Interdisciplinary Research Coordinator to assist the Initiative’s three coordinating directors. The Research Coordinator will work most closely with the PI and the senior lab members on internally-funded neuroimaging and behavioral research on neural correlates of reward and addiction.

Primary responsibilities include: Maintaining collaborations with addiction treatment facilities (at the Veteran’s Administration), assist with recruiting and scheduling substance-use disordered and healthy control research participants, collecting human neuroimaging data (including MRI scanner operation, semi-structured clinical interviewing, neurocognitive testing, and other behavioral data collection), data processing and analysis, preparing reports for funding and regulatory agencies, supporting preparation and submission of publications, training undergraduate research assistants, coordinating the activities of our policy network (i.e., the Stanford Network on Addiction Policy (SNAP)), coordinating interdisciplinary meetings and conferences, and maintaining group emails and websites. This unique position is ideal for recent graduates interested in gaining experience at the intersection of research and policy to advance to a research career.

This is a one year fixed term position with possibility of renewal upon funding availability.

 Core Duties:   

  • Prepare correspondence, documents and reports
  • Maintain and file forms and documents, including consent forms and master subject logs.          
  • Assist with the screening, recruiting, and obtaining consent of study participants. Perform telephone or in-person interviews to gather data, as needed. Schedule and/or call subjects for appointments.
  • Order and maintain equipment and supplies.
  • Process study compensation payments and thank you letters to subjects upon completion of trial activities. Assist with post-study activities, as needed. 

  • Maintain the lab homepage and lab wiki.
  • Apply formulas and calculations to research data using basic statistical programs. Review and verify accuracy of database information and assist in making necessary corrections according to specific guidelines.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Two year college degree and one year of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
  • Bachelor's degree in cognitive science, psychology, linguistics, computer science, or a related field.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • General understanding of scientific theory and methods.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with human study participants
  • Desired knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Basic understanding of research design and analysis (e.g., from Introduction to Psychology)
  • Fundamental statistical knowledge about how to analyze data (e.g., from Introduction to Statistics).
  •  Strong interpersonal skills for working with human study participants.
  • Ability and motivation to complete tasks efficiently and independently.
  • Experience with academic writing and publication.
  • Organization and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with statistics and computers, including the Linux operating system and programming/scripting (e.g., in shell script, Python, R, or Matlab).
  • Experience with acquiring and analyzing neuroimaging data.
  • Skill in recruitment and testing of clinical patients.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Strong attention to detail, quick learner, able to work independently, demonstrate initiative, and organizational and interpersonal skills are essential. 
  • Familiarity with statistics and computers, including the Linux operating system and programming/scripting highly desired.
  • Prior fMRI experience and familiarity with AFNI strongly preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, writing by hand, and sort/file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl, rarely reach/work above shoulders, and operate foot and/or hand controls.
